Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The polymerase chain reaction(PCR) is a method of copying a DNA or RNA strand thousands of times, in a matter of minutes, by using the natural ability of an enzyme called polymerase to copy DNA.... Scientists must know... what DNA sequences flank or frame either ends of the desired portion. Complementary copies of the DNA sequences that flank the ends are created by using special enzymes; they are called primers. They identify the start and end of the copying process.... Since primers are complementary to the beginning and ending regions of the desired portion of the DNA sequence, they will bond to those areas and act as a building block for the copying process to begin and end. 3, record 5, English, - primer

No virus has ever been causally associated with CJD [Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease]. If such a virus exists its properties are very unusual. It must be ubiquitous but normally non pathogenic. PrP [prion protein] would be essential for its infectivity e. g. perhaps serving as a receptor. Prion strains exist(more than 20 strains have been identified in mice infected with scrapie prions and several strains from humans). These strains breed true in inbred mice and differ in their incubation times and lesion profiles. This observation and the reluctance to accept because of precedence the existence of a replicating agent lacking a nucleic acid genome has led to the virino hypothesis. It proposes that a small nucleic acid in association eith PrP is the infectious agent. It is not fully consistent with all of the data and no such nucleic acid sequence has ever been detected. 1, record 6, English, - virino

1, record 12, French, - temporisation%20d%27un%20intervalle

The process by which products are retrieved from specified storage locations on the basis of customer orders is in most companies a manual job. The order picking process is in general the most laborious of all warehouse processes and therefore contributes for a large extend to warehousing costs. According to Tompkins et al.(1996) order picking typically amounts to 55% of warehouse operating expenses. Furthermore, generally 50% of total order picking time is spent on traveling(Tompkins et al., 1996). Therefore, it is often possible to obtain a substantial reduction in order throughput times and obtain simultaneously a reduction of costs, by reducing the travel distances in the order picking process. One way to reduce travel distances is to optimize order picking routes. Given that the order picker has to collect a number of products in specified quantities at known locations, in what sequence should the order picker visit these locations in order to minimize the distance traveled?... In the near future, other issues like the layout of the order picking area and batching policies will be studied. 1, record 14, English, - order%20picking%20area

Multiplex DNA sequencing : The increasing demand for DNA sequences can be met by replacement of each DNA sample in a device with a mixture of N samples so that the normal throughput is increased by a factor of N. Such a method is described. In order to separate the sequence information at the end of the processing, the DNA molecules of interest are ligated to a set of oligonucleotide "tags" at the beginning. The tagged DNA molecules are pooled, amplified, and chemically fragmented in 96-well plates. The resulting reaction products are fractionated by size on sequencing gels and transferred to nylon membranes. These membranes are then probed as many times as there are types of tags in the original pools, producing, in each cycle of probing, autoradiographs similar to those from standard DNA sequencing methods. 1, record 18, English, - multiplex%20DNA%20sequencing

1, record 18, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20s%C3%A9quen%C3%A7age%20multiplex
