CONT

Operating into a shallow ground fog can prove quite dangerous because the approach and runway lighting systems, which are visible through the fog as the approach descent is conducted, shorten rapidly or disappear entirely when the aircraft approaches and enters the top of the fog layer.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

CONT

OBS

In 1951 John L. Rich was the first to propose that the depositional settings of sediment accumulation on the shelf, slope, and bottom be(1) unda for shallow water overlying the shelf,(2) clino for the deeper water overlying the slope, and(3) fondo for the deepest water covering the bottom of the basin(Friedman(2001). Rich suggested the terms(1) undaform for any surface underlying an unda environment;(2) clinoform for any surface underlying a clino environment;(3) fondoform for any surface underlying a fondo environment.... Following this approach Mitchum(1977) proposed that clinoform surface be used for the sloping depositional surface that is commonly associated with strata prograding into deep water.

OBS

Rich chose three Greek words as general ones for the three critical environments. These are (1) unda for the shallow water overlying the shelf, (2) clino for the deeper water overlying the slope, and (3) fondo for the deepest water covering the bottom of the basin.

DEF

A subaqueous landform, such as the continental slope of the ocean or the foreset bed of a delta.

CONT

A clinoform is a seaward-dipping surface of a prograding sediment body that consists of a gently dipping topset, a steeply dipping foreset, and a gently dipping bottomset. The topset consists of fluvial and subaqueous environments coupled at the shoreline. Clinoforms are ubiquitous in modern depositional systems and are the fundamental constructional units of stratigraphic sequences.
