Climate has a great influence on soil moisture conditions. The engineering behaviour of soils is governed in large measure by their moisture contents. Most clay subsoils exist in an approximate state of moisture equilibrium that may be seriously disrupted by construction drainage or irrigation. The Offshore Engineering Basin, illustrated in Figure 1, is a reinforced concrete structure 75 m in length, 32 m wide with a wall height of 4 m. Water levels may be varied up to a depth of 3. 0 m. The entire basin, including the working area surrounding the basin, is serviced by a 5 tonne overhead crane. Waves are generated by means of a segment wave machine, of wet back design, in a fixed "L" configuration. Each segment supports a 2 m high by 0. 5 m wide wave board. These segments are grouped together in sections of four and each section is vertically adjustable to accommodate water depths from 0. 4 m to 3. 0 m. Adjustments are made via electrically powered jacks. Each segment can be operated in five modes of articulation : flapper("20 degrees), piston("400 mm) or three combinations of flapper and piston. These modes optimise segment motion for generating waves in deep, shallow and intermediate water depths, respectively. 3, record 25, English, - offshore%20engineering%20basin

This paper reports the relationship among pico-, nano-and microplanktonic communities observed in two different shallow marine hydrothermal environments. Seawater samples from five stations in the coastal area of the ’Porto di Levante’(Vulcano Island) and from three stations off the Island of Panarea(Eolian Islands, Italy) were collected in May and July of 1989, respectively. Micro-biological investigations were carried out in order to determine the density of :(i) the total picoplankton(both autotrophic and heterotrophic) ;(ii) the total picophytoplankton(autofluorescent picoplanktonic cells) ;(iii) the larger phytoplankton(>2 [mu] m) ;(iv) the ’metabolically active’ cells of total picoplankton and cyanobacteria;(v) the heterotrophic aerobic bacteria. 1, record 27, English, - picophytoplankton

[have a] shell [that is] usually equivalve(...), ovate, orbicular or subtrigonal, most commonly higher than long, many forms somewhat extended obliquely in [an] anteroventral direction(i. e., opisthocline) ;[they are] typically biauriculate but with [the] anterior auride reduced or absent in some forms and [the] posterior wing or auricle usually obtuse and commonly ill-differentiated from [the] body of [the] shell; [a] triangular cardinal area with [a] shallow triangular ligament pit [is] present in both valves, [the] umbones [are] well separated; many forms(...) [have an] anterior gape close to or well separated from [the] hinge margin and some(...) [have a] posterior gape also, [the] gapes affecting both valves equally; [the] hinge [is] edentulous or with weak teeth of [the] taxodont type; [they are] mosomyarian, adductor scars rather obscure in most forms; [the] surface [is] smooth or with radial ornament, concentric ornament [is] very rare; [the] ostracum(...) [has an] outer calcitic layer and middle and inner layers of non-nacreous aragonite.(Some Recent forms capable of swimming by [a] flapping of valves,(...) [Bivalves of the] family Anthracosiidae(...) [have shells that are] equivalve or subequivalve, highly variable, but commonly ovate, elliptical, subtriangular or suborbicular in outline; [the] hinge line [is] gently arcuate. [A] circular anterior adductor scar [is] deeply impressed, slightly smaller in area than [the] shallow oval posterior scar and situated near [the] margin with [the] angle of [the] usually well-defined, subtriangular frontal lobe; [the] anterior retractor muscle [is] situated above and close to [the] anterior adductor, its impression visible on [the] internal molds as [a] small single or double scar on [the] crest of [the] umbonal ridge. Dentition [is] variable, usually consisting of one subumbonal tooth(in both valves or in only one), which may not reach [the] edge of [the] hinge plate, but two teeth may occur in each valve, or in one valve only(single tooth, which may be in either valve, fitting between) ;[there are] rarely more than two teeth(maximum four, of low relief) present in each valve, and [the] hinge plate may be edentulous. [The] lunule and escutcheon [are] variable, but usually feebly defined. "Carb., ? Perm. ". 1, record 43, English, - Anthracosiidae
