Unlike the Royal Navy where diving is a specialist trade, in the army it is an additional qualification on top of soldier and trade skills and divers are not employed in the role on a full time basis. Despite this, the training and requirements are just as rigorous and the award of a shallow water diver's badge at the end of the training is treated with great pride.

Fossils of these lobsters were known long before living specimens were found. The fossil species lived in shallow waters and had functional eyes. The living species are all blind and live at great depths. Their integument is soft and flexible, and the first four, and sometimes all five, pair of legs end in claws. No other decapod has more than three pairs of legs with claws. The adult deep-sea lobsters live buried in muddy bottoms where they feed mainly on dead organisms that drift down.

A nearly solid red coloration develops only if the fruit is well exposed to the sun. The fruit surface has shallow dimples and numerous, small lenticels(dots) with green russeting at the stem end. Honeycrisp fruit is characterized by an exceptionally crisp and juicy texture. Its flesh is cream colored and coarse. The flavor is sub-acid and ranges from mild and well-balanced to strongly aromatic, depending on the degree of maturity.

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

Ice crystals formed by sublimation within snow, but beneath the snow surface.

CONT

Depth hoar [are] large coarse recrystallized grains of snow that are the end result of the faceting or squaring process within the snowpack, a process driven by temperature gradients. Such crystals are often weak and develop as a result of(locally) strong temperature gradients and resulting vapor pressure differences in the snowpack, especially in shallow snowpacks with cold air temperatures. These grains are formed through re-crystallization of existing snow grains as water vapor is transferred(sublimation and deposition) from warmer regions of higher vapor pressure(near the ground) to colder regions with lower vapor pressure(upper layers closer to the snow surface).

CONT

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), shallow snow that sits on the ground under clear skies and cold temperatures creates depth hoar, also known as sugar snow or squares.

CONT

Depth hoar can be found near the base of the snowpack. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

Depth hoar is often the weakest layer in the snowpack and is a potential sliding layer for avalanches.

OBS

Depth Hoar is also called : Temperature Gradient (TG) (but this is an outdated term), sugar snow, squares, sometimes incorrectly called "hoar frost" by old, rural geezers.

OBS

Cup-shaped crystals are a common form of depth hoar.

OBS

depth hoar: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

DEF

The general genetic model hinges on the divalent nature of uranium - being strongly soluble in oxidizing conditions (uranic: U+6) and relatively insoluble in reducing conditions (uranous: U+4).

CONT

Sampling pipes or tubes are placed against the trench wall, with their lower ends in the french drain, when the trench is dug. Monitoring of each disposal unit(engineered trench) is accomplished by sampling any water found in the french drain through these tubes and analyzing its contents.
