built-up roof membrane : A roof membrane consisting of layers of bitumen, which serves as the waterproofing component, with plies of reinforcement fabric installed between each layer. The reinforcement material can consist of bitumen-saturated felt, coated felt, polyester felt or other fabrics. A surfacing is generally applied and can be asphalt, aggregate, emulsion or a granule-surfaced cap sheet.

There are several application techniques that can be used when the asphalt is installed by mopping. The modified bitumen sheet can be rolled, scrolled or flopped into the asphalt. Regardless of the application technique employed, the crucial factor is that the modified bitumen sheet make complete contact and embed in the hot asphalt. This can be accomplished by lightly brooming the modified bitumen sheet immediately after it has been installed. It is also good roofing practice to “scuff in” the side and end laps to assure that they are completely sealed.

Cette catégorie de feuilles est obtenue à partir de bitumes et de polymères modificateurs (caoutchoucs synthétiques ou matières plastiques) ainsi que de fillers et d'adhésifs aux propriétés particulières. Puisque le processus de fabrication consiste essentiellement à mélanger les éléments, la quantité d'agent modificateur peut être adaptée en fonction des caractéristiques désirées. Les deux agents modificateurs de bitume les plus utilisés sont le SBS (styrène-butadiène-styrène) et l'APP (polypropylène atactique). La teneur moyenne en SBS du composé varie entre 12 et 15 %. En général, une quantité supérieure de SBS entraîne une augmentation de la souplesse à basse température et de la résistance à la fatigue, une élévation du point de ramollissement et un élargissement de la plage des températures de service.

The top ply should be installed in a flood coat of asphalt/bitumen as well. It is important that the asphalt/bitumen has to be at the correct temperature at the point of application. The asphalt/bitumen flood coat must impregnate the entire polyester fleece material, only the top fleece surface needs to be flood coated. Particular attention is paid to the skylight corner curb detail... The installation is finally complete once the parapet flashing are installed. The protected roof membrane is then given a glaze coat of asphalt and insulation, slip sheet and ballast are installed and placed on the roof.

Hot Asphalt Applied Roof Systems... Assure that all membrane plies lay flat and are fully and uniformly bonded to their substrate.(Does not apply to mechanically fastened sheets.) Wrinkles, fishmouths and other like defects must be removed and patched... heavy coated base sheets such as Ultra base and Permavent shall be cut into lengths "short enough to be easily handled" and allowed to warm up and relax prior to installation. Appropriate maximum length may vary depending upon temperature conditions. The base sheet must be warmed to a temperature sufficient to allow expansion and relaxation of the asphalt coating, otherwise wrinkles may form.

Des essais en laboratoire sur une membrane qui s'était plissée vis-à-vis chaque joint du support d'isolant ont montré que la quantité moyenne d'asphalte était de l'ordre de 1,75 kg/m².
