It is estimated that about 80% of existing vats are of the counterflow type.... In this type of vat, the slurry flows opposite to the direction of cylinder rotation, causing sheet formation to begin at the point of highest consistency. Although relatively thick plies can be formed(i. e., up to 0. 010 inch or 10 mils caliper, referred to as 10 "points" in the trade), a number of problems are associated with this method. Because the mold rotates opposite to the direction of stock flow, a portion of deposited stock is continuously washed off the mold, resulting in flocced fiber bundles that contribute to "blotchy" formation. 2, record 28, English, - counterflow%20vat

The principle of web formation on a cylinder former is virtually identical to that of a gravity decker.... A horizontal cylinder with a wire or plastic cloth surface rotates in a vat of dilute paper stock. Water associated with the stock drains through the mold and a layer of fibers is deposited on the cloth.... Because the mold rotates opposite to the direction of stock flow, a portion of deposited stock is continuously washed off the mold, resulting in flocced fiber bundles that contribute to "blotchy" formation. The sheet also has extreme directionality(fiber orientation) caused by the method of fiber deposition.(N. B. Directionality is usually measured by the ratio of tensile values obtained on machine-direction and cross-direction samples. Values of 5. 0 are typical for vat cylinder board, as compared to values below 2. 0 for fourdrinier papers.) 1, record 29, English, - directionality

Cette méthode de dépôt des fibres donne des feuilles extrêmement orientées. (Nota : On mesure, d'ordinaire, l'orientation des papiers par le rapport des longueurs de rupture dans le sens marche et le sens travers. On-Top Formers. A feature common to all the formers discussed thus far is that the sheet plies are picked up and carried on the underside of the felt. This transfer method restricts operating speeds and sheet dryness levels. Another problem is that the sheet must be righted before it enters the press section; the usual procedure is to run the forming section in the opposite direction to the rest of the machine, and turn the felt over with a long carryback section. Less often, the delicate sheet is transferred from one felt to another entering the press section. The remaining formers to be discussed place the sheet on top of the felt or fabric. This approach eliminates the speed and dewatering limitations. But, housekeeping and maintenance aspects must be stressed since the sheet is more vulnerable to drips and spills. 1, record 30, English, - on%2Dtop%20former

1, record 30, French, - formeur%20superpos%C3%A9

The principle of the rod coater is illustrated in Figure 18-12. Again, the sheet picks up the coating mixture from an applicator roll. Here, the doctoring and smoothing function is performed by a small-diameter roll or wire-wound rod which rotates in the opposite direction to the travel of the web. Since web tension is used to maintain pressure against the rod, this coating method is generally limited to heavier weight products that can withstand the tensile loading. 2, record 32, English, - metering%2Dbar%20coater

Geotextile grids are manufactured from polymer sheets using the production sequence illustrated in Figure 2. 16. The first stage involves precise punching of a regular pattern of holes into the sheet. This is followed by carefully controlled stretching of the sheet in one direction while it is gently heated.... If no further processing is carried out a uniaxial grid with narrow rectangular apertures is formed.... The term "uniaxial" arises from the alignment of the stretched polymer ribs and the greatest strength properties in one direction. An alternative form of geotextile grid may be produced by incorporating a second stretching stage where the uniaxial grid is pulled in the transverse direction to give a biaxial grid with a squarer aperture shape.... In this case the term "biaxial" refers to the fact that both the stretched ribs and the strength properties are aligned in two directions. 1, record 36, English, - biaxial%20grid
