The Block Shipping system is the method used to plan and co-ordinate the weekly movement of grain from prairie elevators to export terminals and to mills and maltsters within Western Canada. The main objective of the system is to support Canada's grain marketing program by ensuring that the right kinds of grain, in the required quantities, are moved into forward positions as efficiently as possible. In achieving this objective, the Wheat Board also must ensure that all farmers in Western Canada are given equitable delivery opportunities. 1, record 1, English, - movement%20of%20grain

1, record 1, French, - transport%20du%20grain

For purposes of grain transportation, the railway network in the grain growing area of Western Canada is divided into 49 segments. Each is known as a shipping block. There are 27 blocks on Canadian national, 20 on CP Rail, and two on Northern Alberta Railways. A block is a grouping of railway train runs established so that a railway can, within a block, provide flexible train service from week to week to the various branchlines. There may be two shipping blocks on one geographical area, one for CP Rail and one for Canadian national. 1, record 3, English, - shipping%20block

The 49 shipping blocks are grouped into two large shipping areas. The western shipping area, including those blocks that supply most of the grain shipped through the lakehead port of Thunder Bay to Eastern Canada, St. Lawrence and Atlantic export ports, covers the province of Manitoba and the eastern half of Saskatchewan. The western shipping area, which supplies most of the grain shipped through Canada’s west coast ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, covers Alberta and the western half of Saskatchewan. 1, record 4, English, - shipping%20block

The network of 48 shipping areas or blocks into which the grain producing area of western Canada is divided. Each block represents a train run or railway subdivision or a group of such subdivisions on which are situated a number of shipping points within a fairly homogeneous production area. The shipping blocks are the units within which the Canadian Wheat Board allocates shipping orders among the companies operating elevators within the block. The elevator companies assign the orders to their elevator managers within each block, and this assignment governs the spotting of cars at the elevators for the loading of grain authorized by the shipping orders. 2, record 5, English, - Block%20Shipping%20System
