Record 1 - external organization data 2012-03-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
DEF

The relative content of a component (as dissolved or dispersed material) that may be expressed in percentage by weight or by volume in parts per million, or in grams per liter.

CONT

It is the concentration of radioactive material, rather than its absolute amount, which... determines its potential to create negative impacts onto health and the environment. For example,... small amounts of radioactive waste may be dangerously toxic when only slightly diluted in one litre of water, but may be harmless when diluted in tens of thousands of litres.

CONT

PCB levels of 2 to 6 ng/m³ [nanograms per cubic meter] found in the air in a variety of Ontario urban areas may be slightly high ...

OBS

content: More an explanatory unit than a true synonym; less precise, but can be used in certain contexts.

OBS

level: Refers specifically to the French term "niveau," but it can be used as a translation solution in certain contexts; more abstract than "concentration."

OBS

Do not confuse with "titer," which refers to a specific type of concentration.

DEF

DEF

A white insoluble derivative of phenol, m. p. 174°C., used as a fungicide.

OBS

White powder or crystals; mp 190C; bp 310C with decomposition.... Slightly soluble in water; soluble in dilute alkali, alcohol, ether, benzene. Derivation : chlorination of phenol.... Highly toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption; abuse may be fatal... Use : Fungicide, bactericide; algicide, herbicide,... wood preservative(telephone poles, pilings, etc.).

CONT

Pentachlorophenol is the most widely used of the chlorinated phenols in wood preservation. It is a highly effective organic chemical and is used at concentrations of 3-5% dissolved in heavy petroleum oils. Its low water solubility is an important factor in its effectiveness against wood-rotting fungi and insects.
