A method of climbing a slope on skis at an angle : from a standing position, skis perpendicular to the slope, the skier steps up and forward or backward with the uphill ski and then bring the downhill ski parallel to the uphill one, each step being made at an angle or the direct ascent.

The movement is done by edging the uphill ski to prevent sideslipping. There is a continuing weight transfer from the downhill ski to the uphill one, and from the uphill ski to the downhill one to climb a slope.

When the angle of ice steepens, and more security than the cross-body technique(piolet ramasse) provides is desirable, the axe is planted in the anchor position(piolet ancre)... : with the outside hand just above the spike, the axe is swung so that the pick is anchored in the ice in front and above the climber's head with the shaft parallel to the slope. The inside hand reaches up and grasps the axe head in the self-arrest position. By pulling down on the anchored axe, the climber steps up to a new in-balance position. A gentle and constant outward pull must be kept on the shaft to set the teeth and keep the axe locked into the ice. The axe is removed by pushing the shaft toward the ice and lifting the pick up and out of the ice.

Footwork changes from the duck walk (en canard) to the same flat-foot technique which was used to ascend diagonally. The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery.

Fracture line profile [is] a graphical representation of the components of a slab avalanche prepared by excavating a snowpit at the crown face and measuring a variety of snow parameters from the surface down at and including the bed surface(and sometimes extending to the ground). Typical parameters measured include time, date, location, weather, slope angle, aspect, slab dimensions, and include the snowpack stratigraphy parameters plotted at the appropriate depth from the surface in cm : density, hardness, temperature, moisture, fracture depth.
