CONT

Digital elevation data are sets of elevation measurements for locations distributed over the land surface. Elevation data have many practical uses ranging from environmental to urban. Slope and aspect can be directly derived from elevation. Stream delineation and subsequently watershed boundaries can also be derived. Elevation datasets are also used for scenario analysis ranging from calculations of cut and fill requirements by engineers for projects relating to road construction to viewshed analysis.

CONT

Digital elevation data have been obtained for 54 open rock basins from aerial diapositives using an analytical stereoplotter.

DEF

A snow profile obtained by excavating a snowpit at a recent slab avalanche release site.

CONT

Fracture line profile [is] a graphical representation of the components of a slab avalanche prepared by excavating a snowpit at the crown face and measuring a variety of snow parameters from the surface down at and including the bed surface(and sometimes extending to the ground). Typical parameters measured include time, date, location, weather, slope angle, aspect, slab dimensions, and include the snowpack stratigraphy parameters plotted at the appropriate depth from the surface in cm : density, hardness, temperature, moisture, fracture depth.

CONT

A fracture line profile showed that the slab failed on facets. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

CONT

A fracture line profile revealed that the weakness involved dates back to November. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

Fracture line profile [must be done] ideally within 24 hours after [the avalanche slab] occurrence.

Record your field observations in a notebook. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

Observation is the key to safe travel in avalanche terrain. Observation not only of the mountain scenery but of the multitude of clues indicating snow conditions visible to the perceptive traveller. Some of the things you should look for are as follows : Evidence of Avalanching.... Wind Direction. Aspect. The aspect of a slope to both sun and wind is most important.... The Snow Surface....

OBS

Travelers in the backcountry usually make mental notes of the observed factors and draw immediate conclusions about snow stability. Snow safety operations, however, usually retain written records of the observations. The records are needed for future analysis, for application in forecasting models, and for communication with other operations and agencies. ... Observations should be carried out accurately, reliably, and according to standards (when standards for data collection exist). ... Every observation should be relevant to snow stability. ... Observation should be carried out in places where weather and snow conditions simulate avalanche starting zones as closely as possible ...

DEF

The compass direction a slope faces.

CONT

Slope Orientation. The orientation of the slope to the wind and sun is critical. Leeward slopes (facing away from the prevailing wind) are rapidly loaded by heavy snowfall, even during periods of clear weather. ... The slope’s orientation to the sun is also important. South-facing slopes receive the greatest amount of incoming solar radiation and tend to stabilize more quickly, but they may also release as a wet slide when the sun warms them.

CONT

Natural and accidental avalanches were reported this week in various areas on steep slopes, in particular, on south and east aspect. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

For example, a slope on the east side of a mountain has an east aspect.

DEF

The differential illumination of ground surfaces due to slope angle and aspect variations resulting in surface cover types having a wide range in radiance values.

CONT

The topographic effect is indicated on Landsat images of rugged terrain by the visual impression of relief. It is caused by the variation in spectral radiance due to surface slope and aspect variations. The difference in radiance between a horizontal and sloping surface of the same cover type provides a measure of the topographic effect(Holben and Justice 1981). Holben and Justice(1979) also measured it and showed that the effect is most extreme in areas of rugged terrain and especially for slopes in the principal plane of the sun and at low solar elevations.
