Le tachéomètre mesure l’angle horizontal de la lunette sur le plateau par rapport à une ligne de référence et l’angle vertical de la lunette par rapport au plan horizontal. Il mesure aussi, et c’est sa principale qualité, la distance entre un prisme de réflexion et l’axe verticale de la lunette au moyen d’un rayon laser en mesurant le temps de parcours du rayon. En utilisant la trigonométrie, le tachéomètre peut convertir ces données en coordonnées cartésiennes (X, Y, Z) ou en coordonnées cylindriques (angle, distance, élévation).

The line of lowest elevation or the lower limit of a snowfield at any locality on the earth’s surface above which snow accumulates and remains on the ground throughout the entire year.

Snowline ... is the lowest limit of permanent snow on a mountain. During the cold season, snow will fall onto a mountain and build up. During warmer seasons, the snow may begin to melt. Where the melting is offset by the accumulation of snow, the snow remains all year round - and forms the snowline. The extent of the snowline can vary from year to year on a particular mountain, and is a good indicator of the balance between snowfall and snowmelt.

Snow line [is the] altitude above which or latitude beyond which snow does not melt in summer(usually called the permanent snow line), or, in winter, the line to which snow extends at a given point in time. Stake used in setting out to indicate the edge of a pavement, the shoulder line, the top and toe of banks, etc., and recording the distance from the centre line and the amount of cut or fill required.

As soon as work is started on a cut or fill section, centerline stakes may be destroyed by equipment and many of the slope stakes will be removed. In order to eliminate resurveying of portions of the road to relocate these stakes, offset stakes are placed beyond the limits of construction and are used to relocate the original stakes. Offset stakes are set on a line at right angles to the centerline of the facility. From these, the slope/stakes can easily be located. After relocating a slope stake, the centerline stake can be relocated by measuring toward the centerline of the road the horizontal distance indicated on the slope stake and placing the new centerline stake there; Placement and marking. An offset stake will contain all the info given on the original slope stake plus the horizontal distance from the original slope stake to the offset stake. This offset distance is marked on the front of the stake and is circled to indicate that it is an offset reference. If the off-set stake is at a different elevation than the slope stake, then the cut or fill value will be increased or decreased by the difference in elevation. An offset stake placed a horizontal distance of 6 M and 0. 3 M above the right slope stake mentioned above would be placed and marked....

Custom has sanctioned the naming of the horizontal distance first as 1. 5 to 1(or, frequently 1 1/2 : 1) meaning a distance of 1. 5 ft horizontal to 1 ft vertical; a better and more strictly correct form of expressing such a slope that is not subject to misinterpretation would be 1 on 1 1/2.
