SLOPE FAILURE [15 records]

Record 1 2024-09-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
CONT

Compound Slides(CS). A compound landslide is composed of a large host landslide... that encompasses smaller secondary landslides... The host landslide is a slow-moving landslide set on a gentle slope(<20°) of epiclastic materials. Its surface is irregular, with depressions, bulges, scarps and counterscarps and distensile, compressive and strike cracks. The movement of the host landslide can generate failures that favor secondary landslides located mostly along the steepest slopes of the host landslide(scarps and toe). Diverse types of secondary landslides may be observed on the same host landslide. Multiple levels of groundwater flow are commonly formed within compound landslides due to the presence of multiple low permeability surfaces(faults, cracks, material heterogeneities, and shear planes). An increase in the water table tends to accelerate host landslides and may contribute to secondary landslide failure.

CONT

DEF

A slope on the land surface, roughly determined by and approximately conforming with the direction and the angle of dip of the underlying rocks ...

CONT

Most catastrophic rock slope failures have occurred where the dip angle of the failure plane is approximately equal or slightly less than the angle of shearing resistance, notably on sedimentary dip slopes...

English

Subject field(s)

OBS

A slide resulting from the yielding and redistribution of shear stresses in a soft rock or soil so that a more or less circular surface of failure develops before the cohesion of the rock breaks down and permits a comprehensive, circular sector of the slope to fail by rotating.

French

Domaine(s)

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
OBS

A slide resulting from internal deformation leading to failure of a hard rock, jointed, blocky mass. It is believed that failure is initiated by the concentration of stress on corners of the individual blocks bounded by joint planes and that, when a general breakdown has occurred, a flow of blocks and pulverized material to the bottom of the slope occurs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
OBS
