A permanent thermocline exists beneath the stream sloping upward from the right to the left side of the current. This thermocline separates the warm water of the Gulf Stream from the cold slope water and the boundary is often referred to as the cold wall or north wall. The north wall makes it easy to identify the position of the Gulf Stream in satellite infrared images by observing the strong sea surface temperature gradient.

Estuarine marshes are confined to intertidal and supratidal zones of estuaries. Water levels are subjected to tidal changes but water levels do not change as greatly as in other tidal marshes. There is a major input of freshwater in these marshes which makes estuarine marsh waters brackish to fresh. Vegetation develops in zones in response to variations in slope, water depth and salinity gradient. Water is brackish or fresh.

The shelf usually ends at a point of increasing slope (called the shelf break). The sea floor below the break is the continental slope.

The depth of the break between the continental shelf and the continental slope changes along the margin. Most of the shelf-slope break is deeper than 500 m, 300 m deeper than the shelf-slope break on North America’s Atlantic margin. Off the Mackenzie Delta, the polar shelf-slope break is only 200 m deep, but between Borden and Meighen islands is as deep as 700 m.

At low temperatures(especially during clear weather) a temperature gradient appears in the snow, bringing about phenomena which render the snow or individual layers more fragile and loosen the bonds between crystals. The snow in these layers is called crusted snow, white frost or liquid snow. It can be recognised by its dryness, and on a slope it flows and looks like crystals of sugar. Layers of compressed snow lying on the fragile layer of white frost may tear off and trigger an avalanche. a measure of the average gradient of sensitometric curve. The slope of two parallel lines drawn 0. 1 coordinate units apart framing the sensitometric curve. One line is tangent to the high-density portion(shoulder) of the curve; the other line is tangent to the low-density portion(toe) of the curve. Bar "gamma" is the slope of the framing lines and is expressed as the tangent of the angle made by the lines and the log exposure base line. Bar "gamma" is normally used in micrographics to express the contrast of diazo and vesicular films.
