SLOPE ORIENTATION [3 records]

Record 1 2006-10-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

The compass direction a slope faces.

CONT

Slope Orientation. The orientation of the slope to the wind and sun is critical. Leeward slopes(facing away from the prevailing wind) are rapidly loaded by heavy snowfall, even during periods of clear weather.... The slope's orientation to the sun is also important. South-facing slopes receive the greatest amount of incoming solar radiation and tend to stabilize more quickly, but they may also release as a wet slide when the sun warms them.

CONT

Natural and accidental avalanches were reported this week in various areas on steep slopes, in particular, on south and east aspect. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

For example, a slope on the east side of a mountain has an east aspect.

OBS

aspect; slope aspect: terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

DEF

Direction dans laquelle est orientée une pente.

CONT

Record 2 2004-01-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
DEF

This datum has its origin in Tokyo. It is defined in terms of the Bessel ellipsoid and oriented by means of a single astronomic station. By means of triangulation ties through Korea, the Japanese datum is connected with the Manchurian datum. Unfortunately, Tokyo is situated on a steep geoid slope and the single-station orientation has resulted in large systematic geoid separations as the system is extended from its initial point.

Record 3 1978-05-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
OBS

A slide resulting from the pressure of a plane of weakness, e. g., fault, dyke or soft layer, in a critical orientation within the slope. Large segments of the slope move down along this plane.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
OBS
