SLOPE PLANTING [9 records]

Record 1 2017-04-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Landscape Architecture
CONT

As a floor, earth can be seen as an abstract surface. If apparently level, with just enough slope for drainage, it is ready to be covered with paving, grass, ground cover, or other planting, which is necessary to prevent dust in dry weather and mud in wet weather; if sloping or irregular, earthwork may be necessary to conform to new construction or to the design plan, to provide adequate drainage, or in order to relate properly to neighbouring topography and views.

Sodding is generally the best way to ensure a rapidly established groundcover that will stop erosion; on a steep slope, the sod should be pegged to stop it from slipping. If possible, terracing or other mechanical methods of erosion control should be combined with planting to counteract erosion.

Carefully place plant into the prepared pits and fill in around the ball to one-half the depth of the hole with loam ... Roots that have been wrapped around the ball within the burlap shall be made to lay in as natural a manner as possible. Fill remaining area of hole with loam and thoroughly tamp to 85-percent of maximum density. Form a saucer around the edge of the backfilled hole by constructing a berm. The finish height of the compacted berm shall be 3-inches. No excess soil other than the berm will be allowed to remain within the plant saucer. Fill saucer area with water.

CONT

The planting of trees and shrubs of large size is completed by the addition of an earthen collar at the limits of the pit to retain and focus water toward the root ball. Slope plantings especially benefit from having this water-holding saucer.

CONT

If you construct an earth basin around the tree or shrub, place berms just outside of the root ball. This forces water through the root ball. Irrigate the entire tilled area. Water will settle the backfill soil without restricting aeration.

When gradients become as steep as 1:3, site grading features, such as retaining walls, stairs, ramps and tree wells, should be used. Retaining walls can increase the usable level space on a site. One method of accomplishing this is to build several low walls to create a terraced effect .... Fig. 63. An example of a terraced slope that provides more usable level space while easing maintenance.

DEF

In earthwork, the steepness of an embankment expressed as the ratio of its horizontal distance to one foot of vertical distance. For example, a 2:1 slope means a 2 foot horizontal distance for each 1 foot of vertical distance.

CONT

Slope ratios are determined by constraints such as design height, soil stability, susceptibility to erosion, ease of planting, type of maintenance program, function and circulation.... Slope ratios for routes of circulation are related to the ability of pedestrians or vehicles to ascend or descend a slope.
