Slope tests. Skiers and snowboarders can test short slopes that are steep enough to avalanche by turning hard near the top of the slope and quickly continuing to a safe spot. This ski-cutting gives an indication of the stability of nearby larger slopes.

Dans tous les cas, la personne qui effectue les tests doit pouvoir être observée d'un endroit sûr par quelqu'un d'autre.

Don’t let your vacation end in tragedy. Stay on marked trails. Do not ski out of bounds. Test a new slope for snow pack stability before cutting fresh tracks. If no one else has skied it, it may not be safe. Look for typical avalanche signs, like strewn boulders and broken trees. This may be a good indication whether this particular slope has avalanched before.

Outre les signes de vent, les signes les plus inquiétants sont fissures fines que l'on peut observer en surface et qui parfois se propagent quand on avance. [...] Fissures et «whoumfs» sont des signes très inquiétants. Ces fissures peuvent être observées même sur le plat, la neige qui les constitue a souvent été emportée par le vent. Il ne faut pas les confondre avec les «gueules de baleines», très larges fissures dans le manteau qui vont en général jusqu'au sol. Ces «gueules de baleines» sont la conséquence de la reptation du manteau au cours de la saison, il ne s'agit pas d'un signe de risque d'avalanche (ni d'une absence de risque non plus).

The shovel shear test provides information about the location where the snow could fail in shear. It is best applied for identification of buried weak layers and does not usually produce useful results in layers close to the snow surface. Soft snow near the surface is better tested with the tilt board and the shear frame or an improvised version of this tilt test.

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Easy... Moderate... Hard...

A stability test in which a person, usually on skis or a snowboard, loads a large blocks of the snowpack in stages.

The Rutschblock test(shear block) and it's cousin the Rutschkiel test... have rapidly become the standard snowpit test of choice for avalanche professional who do a lot of snowpits... First, on a slope of at least 30 degrees, isolate a block of snow about a ski length across, and a ski pole length up the slope(2 meters wide by 1. 5 meters upslope). If you use a snow saw which mounts on the end of an avalanche probe ski pole you can cut the block in under a minute... Next, simply step onto the block with your skis or snowboard on and jump progressively harder until the block fails.

Cornice tests... they have been standard techniques among ski patrollers, helicopter ski guides and especially climbers for decades. Cornices are the bombs of the backcountry. Simply find a cornice which weighs significantly more than a person and knock it down the slope. A cornice the size of a refrigerator or a small car bouncing down a slope provides an excellent stability test. The smaller the cornice, the less effective the test. You can kick the cornice, shovel it or best of all, saw it with one of those new snow saws which mounts on the end of a ski pole.
