Compound Slides(CS). A compound landslide is composed of a large host landslide... that encompasses smaller secondary landslides... The host landslide is a slow-moving landslide set on a gentle slope(<20°) of epiclastic materials. Its surface is irregular, with depressions, bulges, scarps and counterscarps and distensile, compressive and strike cracks. The movement of the host landslide can generate failures that favor secondary landslides located mostly along the steepest slopes of the host landslide(scarps and toe). Diverse types of secondary landslides may be observed on the same host landslide. Multiple levels of groundwater flow are commonly formed within compound landslides due to the presence of multiple low permeability surfaces(faults, cracks, material heterogeneities, and shear planes). An increase in the water table tends to accelerate host landslides and may contribute to secondary landslide failure. 1, record 1, English, - host%20landslide

A rain garden is a garden of native shrubs, perennials, and flowers planted in a small depression, which is generally formed on a natural slope. It is designed to temporarily hold and soak in rain water runoff that flows from roofs, driveways, patios or lawns. Rain gardens are effective in removing up to 90% of nutrients and chemicals and up to 80% of sediments from the rainwater runoff. Compared to a conventional lawn, rain gardens allow for 30% more water to soak into the ground. 1, record 8, English, - rain%20garden

Contour ditch irrigation is also known as wild flooding. It consists of a series of ditches spaced 25 to 100 m apart. There is a slight slope along these ditches and usually, the downslope bank is lower so that the water, when checked, is not restrained from flowing into the field along the entire ditch. Sometimes, water release into the field is accomplished by making cuts through the down-slope bank or using siphons. Theoretically, in contour ditch irrigation the water moves down the slope as a uniform sheet. Successive ditches located down the slope pick up the surface runoff and redistribute it to lower portions of the field. 4, record 12, English, - contour%20ditch%20irrigation

One of the oldest screening devices is the trommel, which can be used wet or dry. Its usual form is cylindrical, with the screening plates forming the side walls, and a downward slope from feed to discharge end.(...) When "washing trommels" are used, the feed is picked up by internal lifters made of angle-iron, and is sprayed. The water runs out with the undersize and slime. 3, record 13, English, - washing%20trommel

1, record 13, French, - trommel%20laveur

Snowline ... is the lowest limit of permanent snow on a mountain. During the cold season, snow will fall onto a mountain and build up. During warmer seasons, the snow may begin to melt. Where the melting is offset by the accumulation of snow, the snow remains all year round - and forms the snowline. The extent of the snowline can vary from year to year on a particular mountain, and is a good indicator of the balance between snowfall and snowmelt. 6, record 29, English, - permanent%20snowline

Snow line [is the] altitude above which or latitude beyond which snow does not melt in summer(usually called the permanent snow line), or, in winter, the line to which snow extends at a given point in time. Factors affecting the location of the snow line are the quantity of snowfall, the steepness of the slope on which snow rests, the exposure of an area to the sun and prevailing winds, the type and velocity of the winds, and the presence or absence of large bodies of water. The level of the snow line is much lower in winter than in summer. It is also affected by distance from the equator, along which it is found at an altitude of c. 3 mi(5 km) ;in polar regions it is at sea level. 4, record 29, English, - permanent%20snowline

This specification covers asphalt-saturated organic felt for use as an underlayment in steep slope roofing. The objective of this specification is to provide a finished product that will lie flat and resist wrinkling, puckering, and shrinking when left exposed to the sun, rain, frost, or dew for a period of two weeks after application. In the process of manufacture, a single thickness of organic dry felt shall be uniformly saturated with an asphaltic saturant and the felt shall be produced principally from organic fibers. The surface of the felt shall be uniform and relatively smooth and upon splitting or tearing on the bias, the felt shall appear free of lumps or particles of foreign substances. The material shall conform to the prescribed physical requirements such as tear strength, pliability, loss on heating, liquid water transmission, breaking strength, and dimensional stability, and to the specified dimension and mass requirements such as roll width, roll area, net mass of saturated felt, net mass of desaturated felt, saturation, moisture, and saturating efficiency. The finished product shall not crack nor be so sticky as to cause tearing or other damage upon being unrolled. 6, record 40, English, - asphalt%20saturated%20felt

4, record 40, French, - feutre%20impr%C3%A9gn%C3%A9%20d%27asphalte

"Glide avalanches" occur when the entire snowpack(from ground to surface) slides slowly downslope. A large crack(called a "glide crack") is formed at the top of the slope, and below this crack is where the snow is slipping down the hill. The rate of glide is variable and based on many factors(not well understood). The two biggest influences are the ground cover(smooth grass and rock slab cause glide) as well as the amount of free water at the base of the snowpack which can lubricate the sliding surface. Often these glide slabs will slip downhill for months, or most of the winter. They are very unpredictable and when they decide to release then we generally get a very large avalanche because the entire snowpack depth to the ground slides. When the glide slab finally releases-that is a "glide avalanche. "[Reference : Grant Statham, Avalanche Specialist, Parks Canada. ] 4, record 42, English, - glide%20avalanche

Patterned Ground Landforms. ... Thermokarst is a general term that refers to the many landforms that develop in response to the melting of ground ice ... Two cases are presented to demonstrate the development of thermokarst features. 2, record 48, English, - thermokarst%20features
Record number: 48, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Thermokarst features are produced by thawing of ground ice when the climate improves or by fires, disturbance of vegetation, erection of heated buildings, etc. in present-day permafrost areas. Localised collapse produces irregular hollows often with small thaw lakes, which progressively increase in size and coalesce to form large lakes(alases). Enlargment of thaw lakes occurs by thermo-erosion of the permafrost on the shores; this leads to slumping and the sediment released is often spread across the lake floor. The thaw-induced slope failures(ground-ice slumps) cause lake marginal cliffs to retreat at rates of 10 m/year or more. Small thaw lakes often form at the intersection of ice wedge polygons, and when these are joined by water in the marginal furrows of the polygons they form "beaded drainage". Thermokarst features cause many engineering(ground stability) problems encountered in permafrost regions. 3, record 48, English, - thermokarst%20features

2, record 49, French, - hydrate%20de%20gaz

Contour ditch irrigation is also known as wild flooding. It consists of a series of ditches spaced 25 to 100 m apart. There is a slight slope along these ditches and usually, the downslope bank is lower so that the water, when checked, is not restrained from flowing into the field along the entire ditch. Sometimes, water release into the field is accomplished by making cuts through the downslope bank or using siphons. Theoretically, in contour ditch irrigation the water moves down the slope as a uniform sheet. Successive ditches located down the slope pick up the surface runoff and redistribute it to lower portions of the field. 1, record 56, English, - contour%20ditch%20irrigation

There are bound to be rainstorms whose water the soil cannot fully absorb-a point of major importance in arid and semi-arid areas, for this water can be collected and used to improve productivity locally. The following four water management methods and erosion control structures apply :. runoff harvesting(catching runoff for supplementary irrigation) ;. total absorption or infiltration;. runoff diversion(redirecting excess water) ;. runoff spreading(distribution of runoff energy).... Structures to dissipate runoff energy. When rainfall exceeds the soil' s absorption capacity, the sheet runoff can be controlled by spreading it across the whole slope rather than concentrating it in channels and outlets, where it can cause problems. Its energy can be dispersed by keeping the speed below 25 cm... Such dispersion across the slope is achieved partly by cropping techniques that keep the soil surface rough(clods, many grass stalks, effect of weeds and mulching, etc.) and partly by structures such as permeable microdams, which temporarily slow the flow, allow some sedimentation, spread the flood, reduce peak flows and improve absorption. 1, record 57, English, - runoff%20spreading

There are basically 3 types of irrigation methods : Surface irrigation-Gravity system. Sprinkler irrigation-Pressurized system. Drip irrigation-Pressurized system. Surface Irrigation. Surface/gravity irrigation is characterized by the movement of water across the surface of the irrigated field. A distinction is made between the 2 main surface methods : a) Flood irrigation. b) Furrow irrigation. Surface irrigation is not economical with water, cannot be used in slope areas, not suitable for some crops and requires much labour. The overall irrigation efficiency in surface irrigation is not more that 45%-55%. 3, record 58, English, - surface%20gravity%20irrigation

The water travels down with a velocity, v(v=ksin). There is no rain r evaporation from time 0 to t. Thus, the moisture content at x and t... is the same as the moisture content(let's say location xA at time 0) at a distance x-xA uphill from x.... The moisture content at location xA is dependent on the rainfall with rate I prior to time 0 and is determined by moisture content at the top of the slope, 0, plus the amount of rainfall that fell during the time needed to travel from the top to xA.... By imposing dK/d to be constant, we effectively ignore the slow drainage as decreases and, thus, enhance the gravity effect artificially compensating for the fact that we ignored possible macropore flow. 1, record 59, English, - gravity%20effect

All clouds, from the puffy cumulus to the wispy cirrus, is a portion of air that has condensed into visible moisture. Cooling of such a portion of air to its dew point is by far the main reason for cloud formation. The main cause for the cooling lies in some process which causes air to rise or be forced upward. Large warm air masses may slide up the slope of a colder heavier mass of air. As the warmer air overrides the cooler, the warm air expands and is cooled itself by the expansion of air molecules, thus finally reaching a dew-point temperature resulting in widespread cloudiness. All clouds consist of minute water droplets, ice crystals, or a combination of both. 1, record 66, English, - cloud%20formation

Le coin d'eau qui est emprisonné devant le masque se déplace avec lui. Erosion control Mattress... the placement of revetment mats on slopes to be protected is one of the methods of erosion control.... The mattress generally consist of double layers of woven fabric forms placed on the slope to be protected and filled with concrete or grout.... this type of forming system is a simple, fast, and economical technique for the placement of concrete for slope protection both above and below the water without the need for dewatering.... For normal installations, the fabric forms, prefabricated to job specifications and dimensions, are simply spread over the terrain, which has received minimal grading. The fabric form is then pumped full of mortar.... This same concept can be used where slide problems are caused by eroding of the toe of the slopes, and where access is difficult for placement of rip-rap. 1, record 84, English, - erosion%20control%20mattress
