Dickinson(1973) applied the term "arc-trench gap" to the zone between the trench slope break and the volcanic axis, a region that includes the frontal arc and part of the forearc. The width of the arc-trench gap varies from 50 km to 250 km and increases in proportion to the duration of magmatic activity in the arc.

The exposure of much more rock to subaerial erosion will greatly increase the volume of sediment which reaches inter-island gap, the arc-trench gap and the back-arc area.

The [avalanche-control team skis] above the avalanche starting zone and throw a dynamite charge of around 2. 5kg. This is a dangerous operation as it involves the direct handling of explosives and the [team] may get caught in the avalanche.... Even in modern, well equipped stations such as Val d’Isère this method is still employed. More rarely, ski cutting is also used. This consists of a [skier] traversing a slope at a certain angle and speed on skis, this is often enough to weaken the bonds between snow layers starting a slide. Needless to say it requires a lot of skill.

Avalanche path... includes the starting zone(where the avalanche initiates), the track(where the avalanche accelerates and may gather more snow), and the runout(where the avalanche decelerates owing to a decrease in slope angle). These areas include but are not limited to steep open slopes, gullies and bowls. It should be noted that avalanche paths come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and the smaller ones should not be overlooked as they claim a disproportionate share of avalanche victims.

An avalanche path may contain a single track fed by multiple starting zones which are separated by terrain features such as ridges or forest. Different starting zones in a path may also be distinguished by aspect and elevation. It is possible for several starting zones feeding a track to release avalanches simultaneously or within a short time of one another.

The runout zone is the portion of the avalanche path where snow slows down and comes to rest. The area where the bulk of the snow accumulates is called the deposition zone. Sometimes this is surrounded by an area of deposited airborne snow dust called the wind-blast zone. In high mountains, where avalanche tracks are long and steep, ... runout zones can extend for considerable distances across relatively flat terrain.

Although underlying terrain variations, such as gullies or small boulders, can create conditions that will bury a person further up the slope during an avalanche, the deposition zone is where a victim will most likely be buried.

The term "deposition zone" is sometimes used in the sense of "runout zone". In fact, the "deposition zone" is an area within the "runout zone."
