SLOPING PLANE [6 records]

Record 1 2005-10-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

The differential illumination of ground surfaces due to slope angle and aspect variations resulting in surface cover types having a wide range in radiance values.

CONT

The topographic effect is indicated on Landsat images of rugged terrain by the visual impression of relief. It is caused by the variation in spectral radiance due to surface slope and aspect variations. The difference in radiance between a horizontal and sloping surface of the same cover type provides a measure of the topographic effect(Holben and Justice 1981). Holben and Justice(1979) also measured it and showed that the effect is most extreme in areas of rugged terrain and especially for slopes in the principal plane of the sun and at low solar elevations.

OBS

topographic effect: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Mining Equipment and Tools
  • Processing of Mineral Products
  • Mineral Processing (Metallurgy)
DEF

A relatively wide trough set at a slope and covered with a blanket or corduroy for catching comparatively coarse gold and any valuable mineral.

DEF

... a stationary inclined plane, sloping downward with just sufficient inclination for a film of pulp to flow gently along. The light mineral particles roll down, while the heavier ones stop on a removable cloth lying on the surface.

DEF

Record 3 1999-04-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Landscape Architecture
CONT

Enframement: Various areas of the landscape may be made more attractive or emphasized by enframing them with woody plants. Examples of enframement include support for building or architectural details and enframement of vistas or views.

CONT

A vista has three planes of enframement.... The vertical planes may be natural or architectural--as loose as unclipped foliage or as solid as masonry. The base plane or planes may be sloping, level, or terraced; they may be of turf, water, paving, or other surfacing. Often the overhead plane is open, or it may be lightly defined by the foliage arch provided by overhanging trees, or it may be roofed.

Subject field(s)
  • Glues and Adhesives (Industries)
  • Packaging Techniques
DEF

An end joint formed by joining with adhesive the ends of two pieces that have been tapered or beveled to form sloping plane surfaces, usually to a featheredge, and with the same slope of the plane with respect to the length in both pieces. In some cases, a step or hook may be machined into the scarf to facilitate alignment of the two ends, in which case the plane is discontinuous and the joint is known as a stepped or hooked scarf joint.
