ice dam: This term was submitted to our language information service and appeared in the following sentence: "An ice dam is being installed at the back of the building to stop any ice and snow from falling on the deck." However, since we could not validate this use of the term in any other source, we do not recommend its usage. An "ice dam" is normally (and correctly) used to designate a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of an inadequately insulated and ventilated roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof, causing ice damming (in French "digue de glace"). 8, record 16, English, - snow%20guard

A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. 3, record 19, English, - saltbox%20house
Record number: 19, Textual support number: 2 CONT
More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. Given that often a dozen or more people crowded into these early homes, colonists soon began looking for practical ways to expand living space. 1, record 19, English, - saltbox%20house

Because of its powerful recirculating effect, the gas mixing method allows the construction of digesters with a gradually sloping floor; as a result these are cheaper. The cover often takes the form of a fixed roof. Floating covers can also be used, but they are fairly costly to install and maintain. 1, record 43, English, - fixed%20roof

1, record 43, French, - coupole%20fixe

A large-section channel is located under the wash-water discharge channel. This is used to receive the filtrate during the filtration cycle and to distribute scour air and wash water during the wash cycle. These fluids are equally distributed by means of orifices throughout the entire length of the filter. Filtrate outlet pipes and wash-water and scour air inlet pipes discharge into this channel the sloping roof of which serves as a raft for the wash-water discharge channel equipped with its outlet valve located opposite the front of the filter. 1, record 45, English, - scour%20air%20inlet%20pipe

1, record 45, French, - tuyauterie%20d%27entr%C3%A9e%20d%27air%20de%20lavage
