SLOTTED WING [5 records]

Record 1 2014-04-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Airframe
  • Aircraft Maneuvers
OBS

The multiple slotted flap system for aircraft [employs] a plurality of flap sections extending from the edge of a wing in sequential progression by means of tracks and rollers which are wholly contained within the contour of the respective flap sections. Each flap section is individually extended or retracted, allowing for several combinations of flap arrangements.

CONT

DEF

A flap which, when deflected, opens a slot between itself and the main surface.

CONT

The slotted flap is like the Fowler flap in operation, but in appearance it is similar to the plain flap. This flap is equipped with either tracks and roller or hinges of a special design. During operation, the flap moves downward and rearward away from the position of the wing. The "slot" thus opened allows a flow of air over the upper surface of the flap. The effect is to streamline the airflow and to improve the efficiency of the flap.

DEF

OBS

volet à fente : terme normalisé par l'ISO.

CONT

The use of flaps located on the trailing edge of an airplane wing to vary wing lift characteristics during various flight phases is well known. In the so-called single slotted flap arrangement, a wing flap is extended relative to the stationary wing of the aircraft so that a spanwise slot is formed between the trailing edge of the wing and the leading edge of the flap. This slot directs airflow from below the wing and the flap for subsequent discharge across the upper surface of the flap in the direction of and substantially parallel to the air normally flowing over the upper surface of the flap.

CONT

The wings on most modern-day airplanes are equipped with control devices not only to steer the airplane, but also to improve its flying capabilities at specific times, particularly during landing and takeoff. Devices such as slotted wings and flaps increase lift when an aircraft requires it the most.... The design feature generally known as the slotted wing is a long slot that runs lengthwise along the wing, either at the leading edge of the wing or at its trailing edge. It creates greater lift, but also increases drag. It was invented nearly simultaneously in three different places by two individuals working independently in Germany and also by a research team in the United Kingdom.
