A rocket engine is a device in which propellants are burned in a combustion chamber and the resulting high pressure gases are expanded through a specially shaped nozzle to produce thrust. The function of the nozzle is to convert the chemical-thermal energy generated in the combustion chamber into kinetic energy. Yellow Flame. This flame has a small blue-colored area at the bottom of the flame. The outer portion, or outer envelope, is completely yellow and is usually smoking. This smoke is unburned carbon from the fuel. The yellow, or luminous, portion of the flame is caused by the slow burning of the carbon that is being burnt.
