In the most common type of high temperature reactor (HTR) fuel, tiny particles of nuclear fuel are coated with three or four layers of coatings which are impenetrable to fission products up to a temperature of 2000 celsius. About 20,000 particles, bonded with graphite are massed together to form a spherical fuel element with a diameter of about 6 centimeters. The high temperature reactor ... might contain 100,000 or more of these fuel elements. 5, record 3, English, - fuel%20pebble
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The pebbles are... designed to passively limit the amount of heat unleashed by the nuclear fission reactions that drive the reactor. The fissionable material is divided into groups of 100 million billion uranium-235 atoms scattered within a 0. 5 mm sphere of uranium dioxide. That core is coated with four containment layers.... Some 15, 000 carbon-coated uranium dioxide kernels, looking like nuclear poppy seeds, are embedded in a tennis ball-size graphite and resin matrix. Graphite acts to slow the fission neutrons and so acts as an embedded moderator. The matrix is then encased in a 5 mm pure carbon shell, sintered, annealed, and machined to a uniform diameter of 6 cm. 2, record 3, English, - fuel%20pebble

L'ensemble de ces boulets est contenu dans une large trémie en graphite, faisant office de réflecteur, munie au sommet d'un couvercle de même matière, et d'un (ou plusieurs) trou d'évacuation des combustibles à la base. 2, record 3, French, - boulet

Conventional pyrolysis is typically characterized by a slow feedstock heating rate(less than 2 °C/s), low temperatures(less than 500 °C) and relatively long gas and solids residence times(greater than 5 s for the gas; solids residence times can be minutes, hours or days in duration). Tar and char are the primary products due to slow devolatilization of the feedstock, and the secondary coking and polymerization(recombination) reactions which are allowed to occur in the reactor after primary pyrolysis has taken place. 3, record 10, English, - conventional%20pyrolysis

The use of biomass as a feedstock for the production of energy and chemicals has been a popular research topic over the past decade. One of the technologies receiving a great deal of attention is liquefaction in which biomass is converted to oil under high temperatures and pressures. This technology has evolved from a slow, chemical intensive process to a very rapid operation requiring little more than water. Feeling that typical reactor residence times(1-2 hours) were excessive, Beckman developed a small unit capable of reducing heat-up times to less than three minutes. Under these conditions it was found that neither a catalyst nor reducing gas was required. A mixture of only wood and water, when rapidly heated to 350°C, yielded an oil, char and gaseous and aqueous products. 1, record 11, English, - aqueous%20pyrolysis
