The immigrant condition is characterised precisely by differences compared to the native-born population. The objective of policy is to ensure that over time, these differences are reduced and that social and economic outcomes of immigrants are similar to those observed for the non-immigrant population. Children of immigrants, however, are not necessarily immigrants themselves, and even those born abroad may have arrived at an early age. Still, the immigrant experience clearly has an effect on them, even when they have been fully educated in the host country. 2, record 2, English, - immigrant%20condition

The social construction of illness is a major research perspective in medical sociology.... First, some illnesses are particularly embedded with cultural meaning – which is not directly derived from the nature of the condition – that shapes how society responds to those afflicted and influences the experience of that illness. Second, all illnesses are socially constructed at the experiential level, based on how individuals come to understand and live with their illness. Third, medical knowledge about illness and disease is not necessarily given by nature but is constructed and developed by claims-makers and interested parties. 1, record 3, English, - social%20construction%20of%20illness

Childhood disintegrative disorder(CDD) is a rare and little-understood form of pervasive developmental disorder(PDD). CDD is typified by a period of normal development in the child for at least two years before a period of profound and irreversible regression in social and cognitive skills. After regression, behavioural traits in CDD patients are similar to autism. However, the seemingly normal development of the CDD patient before regression onset, as well as the late age of regression onset, are typically considered specific to the condition and markers of its distinctness from other autism spectrum disorder(ASD) diagnoses. 3, record 6, English, - childhood%20disintegrative%20disorder

4, record 6, French, - trouble%20d%C3%A9sint%C3%A9gratif%20de%20l%27enfance

Physician support of patient self-management is a key element in effective treatment for those with multiple chronic conditions. Patients who are able to effectively self-manage have been proven to reduce the need for hospitalizations, emergency department use, and overall managed care costs. Self-management is defined as the ability of the patient to deal with all that a chronic illness entails, including symptoms, treatment, physical and social consequences, and lifestyle changes. With effective self-management, the patient can monitor his or her condition and make whatever cognitive, behavioral, and emotional changes are needed to maintain a satisfactory quality of life. 3, record 8, English, - patient%20self%2Dmanagement

On 8 September, UNESCO celebrates International Literacy Day. Some people may believe that, in the audiovisual age, writing is outmoded; but this is by no means true. On the one hand, the written word is still indispensable as a reference point or a compass, enabling us to get our bearings in the galaxy of visual images. On the other hand, written knowledge is as vital as ever to the self-realization of every individual, every social group and every nation. Mastery of the written word is still a condition of access to knowledge and the full exercise of citizenship. Although illiteracy, in oral civilizations, can clearly not be equated with ignorance, it is a major obstacle to the acquisition of the knowledge and know-how that are essential for daily life in modern society. 1, record 28, English, - International%20Literacy%20Day

1, record 28, French, - Journ%C3%A9e%20internationale%20de%20l%27alphab%C3%A9tisation
