Department of Chemistry, University College London. Computer modelling of crystal-crystal adhesion. The agglomeration of crystals in industrial crystallization processes is a major problem in the manufacture of many solid products. The EPSRC have funded a major collaborative project between UCL chemical engineering and chemistry to combine crystallization and micro-mechanic experiments with theoretical modelling, to develop a molecular based model of crystal agglomeration. One of the positions in this project is a PhD studentship to develop the modelling of inter-crystal forces at the atomistic level. 1, record 3, English, - agglomeration%20of%20crystals

To create a wafer from silicon, purified polycrystalline silicon is heated to a molten liquid. A small piece of solid silicon is placed on the molten liquid, and as the seed is pulled from the molten liquid, it cools to form a single crystal ingot. The crystal ingot is ground to a uniform diameter and diamond saw blade cuts the ingot into thin slices of less than 1 mm thickness. This silicon wafer is then chemically polished to give it a reflective luster. 2, record 13, English, - silicon%20wafer

Solid faceted crystals are those in which the original crystal form is often no longer discernible and the crystals begin to take on an angular, faceted or striated appearance with straight edges and angular corners beginning to predominate. Faceted grains typically tend to be larger grains and are often significantly larger than the grain from which they formed... Commonly referred to as "facets" or "sugar snow" these grains tend to be found in softer or weaker snowpack layers. Faceted grains typically form when there is a strong temperature gradient in the snowpack(>1 degree/10 cm). This strong temperature gradient occurs most often in areas where the snowpack is shallow and temperatures are cold. 8, record 14, English, - facet

What are PDLCs? Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals consist of liquid crystal droplets that are dispersed in a solid polymer backbone. The resulting material is a sort of "swiss cheese" polymer with liquid crystal droplets filling in the holes. These tiny droplets(a few microns across for practical applications) are responsible for the unique behavior of the material. By changing the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules with an electric field, it is possible to vary the intensity of transmitted light. 1, record 26, English, - polymer%20dispersed%20liquid%20crystal

2, record 26, French, - cristal%20liquide%20dispers%C3%A9%20dans%20les%20photopolym%C3%A8res
