Une tentative américaine de construire un réacteur (Advanced Neutron Source) aux limites des possibilités a avorté. Pour aller au-delà, on se tourne donc vers une autre technique : la source à spallation. Celle-ci consiste à arracher des neutrons à des noyaux lourds (Hg, W, Pb, Bi...) au moyen de protons à haute énergie.
