The drawbridge of ancient and medieval periods was built for military purposes. It was constructed to bridge the moat around the castle or fortified town and to be raised in case of attack. The open leaf also constituted an additional barricade across the entrance to the fortification. Many of these early structures were operated by a lever system. One end of the lever was connected to the free end of the span by chains, and the other was actually counterweighted. An arrangement of counterweights attached to chains running over pulleys and connected to the free end of the span was also much in use. 1, record 15, English, - drawbridge

The concept of a dynamic amplification factor (DAF) is used to describe the ratio between the maximum load effect when a bridge is loaded dynamically, and the maximum load effect when the same load is applied statically to the bridge. 2, record 22, English, - dynamic%20amplification%20factor
Record number: 22, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The dynamic amplification factor(DAF) is an important parameter in the design of highway bridges and yet no worldwide consensus has been reached so far as to its value. Some disagreement exists between provisions of various national bridge codes. This is because the DAF depends, in addition to the maximum span or the natural frequency, on many other parameters that are difficult to take into account with reasonable accuracy. Vehicle speed, weight, and dynamic characteristics, the state of the structure, roadway roughness, expansion joints, the type of bridge supports, soil-structure interaction, and influence of secondary elements are some aspects influencing the DAF. This study reviews the analytical and experimental findings on bridge dynamics and the evaluation of the DAF. 3, record 22, English, - dynamic%20amplification%20factor

The vertical-lift bridge has a span similar to that of a fixed bridge, and is lifted by steel ropes running over large sheaves at the tops of its towers to the counterweights, which fall as the lift span rises and rise as it falls. If the bridge is operated by machinery on each tower, it is known as a tower drive. If it is driven by machinery located on the lift span, it is known as a span drive. 1, record 29, English, - tower%20drive

The Roosevelt Island Bridge is a tower drive vertical lift movable bridge... The structural steel lift span of this bridge is suspended at each corner from twelve wire ropes which are draped over a main counterweight sheave located atop the corresponding corner of a tower. The other ends of the ropes are connected to counterweights. There is one span counterweight at each tower. Raising and lowering the bridge is accomplished by rotating the main sheaves using tower drive systems. As the span is raised the two counterweights descend. The lift span is raised and lowered by two identical tower drives, one located in a machinery room atop each tower. 2, record 29, English, - tower%20drive
