DEF

An electrically conducting or semi-conducting nanofibre.

CONT

Two processes in nanotechnology by which nanowires can be manufactured are suspension and deposition. A suspended nanowire is held up by the ends in an evacuated chamber, and then is chemically etched or bombarded with high-speed atoms or molecules to reduce its diameter. Another method involves indenting the surface of a wire in the center of a suspended span, raising the temperature, and then stretching the wire while it is near its melting point. A deposited nanowire is fabricated on a surface consisting of some non-conducting substance such as plastic or glass. The process is similar to that by which semiconductor chips are grown, except that the result is a linear(one-dimensional) structure rather than a flat(two-dimensional) or solid(three-dimensional) structure.

CONT

A nanometer-scale wire [is] made of metal atoms, silicon, or other materials that conduct electricity. Nanowires are built atom by atom on a solid surface, often as part of a microfluidic device. They can be coated with molecules such as antibodies that will bind to proteins and other substances of interest to researchers and clinicians. By the very nature of their nanoscale size, nanowires are incredibly sensitive to such binding events and respond by altering the electrical current flowing through them, and thus can form the basis of ultra sensitive molecular detectors.

OBS

[It is an] extremely thin wire with a diameter on the order of a few nanometers (nm) or less, where 1 nm = 10-9 meter.

OBS

nanowire: term and definition standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

DEF

Nanofibre électriquement conductrice ou semi-conductrice.

CONT

CONT

The de-icer actuated by cartridge(DAC) can be used for emergency work on... transmission lines. The DAC is a portable device operated by remote control. It consists of a cylinder-and-piston system that can be suspended from a conductor or ground wire and fired by means of an electronic trigger. Installation from the ground is facilitated by the use of a line thrower. When the cartridge explodes, it generates a mechanical impulse that propagates along the span, breaking the ice instantaneously.

CONT

CONT

The vertical-lift bridge has a span similar to that of a fixed bridge, and is lifted by steel ropes running over large sheaves at the tops of its towers to the counterweights, which fall as the lift span rises and rise as it falls. If the bridge is operated by machinery on each tower, it is known as a tower drive. If it is driven by machinery located on the lift span, it is known as a span drive.

CONT

The Roosevelt Island Bridge is a tower drive vertical lift movable bridge... The structural steel lift span of this bridge is suspended at each corner from twelve wire ropes which are draped over a main counterweight sheave located atop the corresponding corner of a tower. The other ends of the ropes are connected to counterweights. There is one span counterweight at each tower. Raising and lowering the bridge is accomplished by rotating the main sheaves using tower drive systems. As the span is raised the two counterweights descend. The lift span is raised and lowered by two identical tower drives, one located in a machinery room atop each tower.

CONT

Recent American suspension bridges have all had steel towers of the now traditional cellular design (... those of the Verrazano-Narrows bridge, at their base, are each made up of 92 cells 105 m. square).

OBS

In the... span of the Philadelphia-Camden Bridge..., cold-drawn parallel wire continued to be used in the cables, and cellular construction, in which towers were built up of a number of vertical cells, was adopted for the first time.
