Subject field(s)
  • Animal Anatomy
  • Horse Husbandry
  • Horse Racing and Equestrian Sports
DEF

The darker dentine that fills the pulp cavity as the tooth wears.

CONT

The dental star is surrounded by primary dentine and consists of a central core of tertiary dentine, an intermediate ring of pale secondary dentine and a peripheral rim of darker, yellowish-brown secondary dentine.

Subject field(s)
  • Astronomy
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
  • The Stars (Astronomy)
DEF

The smaller body in a co-orbiting star or planet binary.

CONT

During the course of its evolution the primary expands, and its atmosphere may be gravitationally attracted to the secondary, the gas streaming from one star to the other.... So much gas may flow from the primary to the secondary that the secondary eventually becomes the new primary. Sirius, which has a companion that has evolved into a white dwarf, has now reached this state.

OBS

"Partner" and "mate" may be encountered as stylistic variants of the more technical term "companion".

Key term(s)
  • partner
  • mate

French

Domaine(s)
  • Astronomie
  • Astrophysique et cosmographie
  • Étoiles (Astronomie)
DEF

Record 3 2003-06-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astronomy
  • Planets
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
CONT

The celestial body that is nearest to the centre of mass of a system of orbiting bodies. The other members, called secondaries, appear to orbit the primary, which is the most massive in the system. The earth is the moon’s primary.

OBS

Although the concept of "primary" covers a broader field than just stars, many English sources refer specifically to stars in binary systems, describing the primary as a brighter and usually more massive star than the secondary.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Astronomie
  • Planètes
  • Astrophysique et cosmographie
OBS

primary. The celestial body that is nearest to the centre of mass of a system of orbiting bodies. The other members, called secondaries, appear to orbit the primary, which is the most massive in the system.

OBS

ILAST speaks of a broader concept than just stars, giving as example the Earth as primary and the moon as secondary. Most other English sources refer specifically to stars in binary systems, describing the primary as a brighter and usually more massive star than the secondary.
