Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure that uses an endoscopic suturing(stitching) device to reduce the stomach's size and volume by about 70%.... For the right candidate, ESG may be a less invasive alternative to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Both procedures reduce the stomach size, but [laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy] does so by removing part of the stomach, while ESG uses stitches to bring folds of the stomach together like an accordion(similar to sewing a dart to tailor clothing). 5, record 1, English, - endoscopic%20sleeve%20gastroplasty

The gastrocolic reflex is a physiological reflex that controls the motility of the lower gastrointestinal tract following a meal. As a result of the gastrocolic reflex, the colon has increased motility in response to the stretch of the stomach with the ingestion of food. To do a gastric bypass, the surgeon makes a small pouch, called a gastric pouch, in the upper part of the stomach. The pouch is about the size of an egg or golf ball. The surgeon also separates the upper part of the small intestine from the middle part of the small intestine. The middle part of the small intestine is then attached to the gastric pouch. Restrictive gastric operations, such as vertical banded gastroplasty(VGB), serve only to restrict and decrease food intake and do not interfere with the normal digestive process. In this procedure the upper stomach near the esophagus is stapled vertically to create a small pouch along the inner curve of the stomach. The outlet from the pouch to the rest of the stomach is restricted by a band made of special material. The band delays the emptying of food from the pouch, causing a feeling of fullness. 3, record 7, English, - vertical%20banded%20gastroplasty

3, record 7, French, - gastroplastie%20verticale%20calibr%C3%A9e

Biliopancreatic diversion is primarily a malabsorptive procedure. The standard procedure involves the removal of part of the stomach(a limited horizontal gastrectomy) to limit oral intake and induce weight loss. The gastric pouch that is created is larger than that of gastric bypass or the restrictive procedures, therefore allowing larger meals, and patients remain on a less restricted diet than would the case following gastric bypass. Part of the small intestine is also bypassed by the construction of a long limb Roux-en-Y anastomosis with a short common "alimentary" channel of 50 cm length. 5, record 11, English, - biliopancreatic%20diversion

In these procedures, the small bowel is divided at some point. This leaves two components of small bowel : a proximal component connected to the stomach, pancreas, and biliary system [and] a distal component connected to the terminal ileum and colon. The end of the distal component is dragged up and connected(anastomosed) to the remnant stomach... This is the Roux limb. Gastric bypass is one common type of weight-loss surgery. During bypass surgery, the top of the stomach is changed into a small gastric pouch. A loop of your small intestine is cut, and one end of the loop is brought up and is connected to the gastric pouch. This connection is one anastomosis. The other end of the small intestine loop is reconnected to the small intestine, further down. This is another anastomosis. Food is then redirected to an area farther down in your digestive system. It bypasses the stomach. Because food will now bypass your stomach, your body does not absorb as many calories. 4, record 17, English, - Roux%2Den%2DY%20gastric%20bypass

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is a modification of the biliopancreatic diversion procedure... Biliopancreatic diversion is primarily a malabsorptive procedure. The standard procedure involves the removal of part of the stomach(a limited horizontal gastrectomy) to limit oral intake and induce weight loss.... The combination of biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is an additional adaptation of the standard procedure. It has a sleeve gastrectomy rather than a horizontal gastrectomy. 5, record 21, English, - biliopancreatic%20diversion%20with%20duodenal%20switch

In a biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, a portion of the stomach is removed but the pylorus remains intact. The pylorus, which controls food drainage from the stomach, is connected to a lower segment of the intestine. The duodenum is connected to the lower part of the small intestine. The food you eat then bypasses much of the small intestine. This results in fewer calories absorbed and weight loss. 6, record 21, English, - biliopancreatic%20diversion%20with%20duodenal%20switch

The creation of a BPD [biliopancreatic diversion] necessarily requires an alternation of the normal GI [gastrointestinal] continuity. The basic components of the mechanism, no matter how it is constructed, are as follows :(1) an intestinal segment, immediately following the duodenum, where the meeting between food and digestive juices is prevented, called biliopancreatic limb(BPL) as it only leads the biliodigestive juices to the point of meeting with food;(2) an intestinal segment leading food from the stomach to the point where aliments meet the biliopancreatic secretions, called alimentary limb(AL) ;(3) an intestinal segment, between the point of meeting and the ileocecal valve(ICV), where biliopancreatic digestion starts and the products of it can be absorbed(common limb or CL). 5, record 22, English, - common%20limb

As food enters the intestines for digestion, the peptide hormone cholecystokinin(CCK) stimulates the vagus nerve to send a satiety signal to the brain. The vagus nerve is therefore sensitive to stomach distension and CCK levels, as well as other factors related to food consumption. It communicates these satiety signals to the brain, and reduces food consumption. Other satiety signals operate over a longer time scale. The most important of these is the hormone leptin..., which is released mostly from adipose cells... The more fat in the cells, the more leptin is released into the bloodstream. Plasticosis is a type of fibrotic disease. These conditions are caused by excessive amounts of scarring when an area of the body is repeatedly inflamed and prevents the wound from healing normally. Generally, temporary scar tissue forms after an injury and helps to strengthen the repair. But when inflammation happens again and again, excessive amounts of scar tissue can form which reduces the flexibility of the tissues and causes their structure to change. In the case of plasticosis, the irritation is caused by shards of plastic digging into the stomach tissue. 2, record 26, English, - plasticosis

Motor nerves in the peripheral nervous system carry information from the brain to the body. Scientists came up with the name "motor" because the first motor nerves studied were those that help with muscle movement, or what scientists call motor function. It was later discovered that motor nerves have other purposes in addition to making muscles move. They also send messages from the brain and the spinal cord to body organs. For example, motor nerves help the process of digestion by stimulating cells in the stomach to break down food chemically. 2, record 28, English, - motor%20nerve

The Heliosphere Intragastric Balloon System is a temporary non-surgical obesity treatment that induces short-term weight loss by partially filling the stomach to achieve satiety.... The deflated balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth using an endoscope. It is then filled with air to a final volume of 650 mL to 750 mL and released to float freely in the stomach. The balloon is used with a supervised calorie-restricted diet, and must be removed after six months. Another type of intragastric balloon is the BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon System[, ] a silicone balloon filled with saline. 6, record 30, English, - gastric%20balloon

4, record 59, French, - valvule

For the first month or so of life, the ruminant is functionally a monogastric. The forestomachs are formed, but are not yet fully developed. If milk is introduced into such a rumen, it basically rots rather than being fermented. To avoid this problem in such young ruminants, suckling causes a reflex closure of muscular folds that form a channel from the esophageal orifice toward the omasum(the esophageal groove), shunting milk away from the rumen and straight toward the stomach where it can be curdled by rennin and eventually digested enzymatically. 4, record 61, English, - reticular%20groove

The insecticidal nature of [Bacillus thuringiensis] is attributed to crystal-like proteins that are produced by Bt cells during the spore-forming stage of its life cycle. The crystal protein in Bt kills insects by binding to and disrupting the midgut(stomach) membranes. Susceptible insects will stop feeding within hours of ingesting Bt and will generally die within 2-5 days. The specificity of Bt lies in the fact that particular stomach enzymes(present only in certain insects) must activate the crystal proteins before they are considered toxic. Under normal conditions the crystal protein is insoluble(not active) and is therefore safe to humans, mammals and the majority of insects. 3, record 86, English, - insecticidal%20crystal%20protein

You won’t need surgery to put a nasoduodenal or nasojejunal tube in place. They are long, thin, flexible tubes. The tube is inserted into a nostril, down the back of the throat, down the esophagus, through the stomach and into your small intestine. A nasoduodenal tube goes into the first part of the small intestine, called the "duodenum. "A nasojejunal tube goes into the second part of the small intestine, called the "jejunum.
