Knowing plant water status is useful, but to appreciate how the plant responds to drought we should also monitor some process within the plant. Given that most water is lost from the plant when it opens stomatal pores to photosynthesize, we might hypothesise that stomatal opening is somehow correlated with plant water status. The degree of stomatal opening can be measured with a diffusion porometer. As the name implies, the diffusion porometer measures the rate at which water vapour diffuses out of the leaf, mainly through stomatal pores. The greater the number of these pores and the wider their apertures, the faster will be the rate of water vapour diffusion for given conditions. By measuring this rate of diffusion and knowing the conditions which are driving it, we can calculate stomatal resistance to diffusion of water vapour(or its reciprocal, stomatal conductance). 2, record 1, English, - porometer

4, record 1, French, - porom%C3%A8tre

Stomatal resistance is a measure of the aperture size of the stomates. As such, the stomatal resistance governs the flow of water vapor through the stomates. Since there are thousands of stomates on a leaf, the individual resistance for all the stomates are added together in parallel (the inverse of the sum of the inverse resistances for each stomate) to equal the average stomatal resistance for the leaf. 3, record 2, English, - stomatal%20resistance

The ability of the stomates to impede the flow of water vapor from the interior of the leaf to the atmosphere can be represented by a resistance rs, which is called the stomatal resistance.(The inverse of stomatal resistance, a term favored by many plant scientists, is the stomatal conductance gs.) 3, record 2, English, - stomatal%20resistance

We believe that plants can exert a reflexive control under some circumstances ... They can regulate the size of the openings in their leaf through which the vapor passes to the outside of the leaf ... These openings ... are the stomates. Plants regulate their stomatal aperture, and, in turn, their stomatal resistance in such a way as to limit or augment the flow of water to the outside. 3, record 2, English, - stomatal%20resistance

1, record 2, French, - r%C3%A9sistance%20des%20stomates
