STOMATAL REGULATION [2 records]

Record 1 2004-05-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
DEF

A minute pore in the epidermis of leaves or stems which functions in gaseous exchange between a plant and its external environment.

CONT

Epidermis of leaves ... contains numerous guard cells [placed pairwise] the open space between two paired guard cells is a stoma.

OBS

Stomas are bordered by guard cells which function in the regulation of the size of the opening : stomas plus guard cells are referred to as the stomatal apparatus.

OBS

stoma [designates usually] the opening together with its associated guard cells and accessory cells.

OBS

stoma: The plural form is stomata or stomas.

Key term(s)
  • stomata
  • stomatal opening

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale
CONT

Record 2 2003-06-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
DEF

Stomatal movements results from changes in turgor pressure within the guard cells.

CONT

Stomatal regulation... The major solute responsible for this gradient is potassium(K+) ;higher K+ and Cl-;... Opening occurs when solutes are actively accumulated [water rushes in due to osmosis], in these [guard] cells. Stomatal closure is brought about by the reverse process(a declining guard cell solute) ;water moves out of the guard cells lowering turgor pressure.

OBS

Guard Cell: Pairs of specialized epidermal cells surrounding a pore, or stoma ...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale
DEF
