[Les laves] renferment fréquemment de petits vides dus à des bulles de gaz, ou des cavités de même origine (lithophyses) remplies ultérieurement de cristaux.

Lorsqu’on coupe une lithophyse, on peut observer plusieurs parties : à l’extérieur, une croûte correspondant à des restes de rhyolite partiellement silicifiée et donc non altérée; à l’intérieur, des couches de couleurs diverses (rouge, rose, bleue, grise...) et de formes diverses. C’est de la calcédoine (silice microcristalline) diversement colorée par des oxydes.
