In building penetration-macadam pavement, a base, usually of crushed stone or gravel, is constructed in layers and firmly compacted by rolling. Often during the rolling, water is applied to make what is termed a water-bound base, or macadam. Then, the keyed and wedged fragments in the upper portion of the base are bonded in place by working alternate applications of bituminous material and choke stone into the surface voids. 2, record 7, English, - penetration%20macadam

The conventional pavement underdrain system consists of a perforated pipe collector, a gravel layer around the pipe to prevent its clogging, and a sand filter layer around the gravel to prevent migration of the natural soil from entering the gravel.... A major use of fabrics has been to vastly alter this type of underdrain system. Shown in Figure 5. 2(b) are the schematic diagrams of a replacement of the conventional method using a fabric-wrapped stone aggregate(with or without the perforated pipe) placed directly in an excavated trench. 1, record 9, English, - pavement%20underdrain%20system
