CONT

SMBG works by having patients perform a number of glucose tests each day or each week. The test most commonly involves pricking a finger with a lancet device to obtain a small blood sample, applying a drop of blood onto a reagent strip, and determining the glucose concentration by inserting the strip into a reflectance photometer for an automated reading. Test results are then recorded in a logbook or stored in the glucose meter's electronic memory. People with diabetes can be taught to use their SMBG results to correct any deviations out of a desired target range by changing their carbohydrate intake, exercising, or using more or less insulin.

CONT

DNA dog tag or genetic ID? The US Army began collecting blood and tissue samples from new recruits... that will allow pathologists to identify the smallest tissue specimens by cross-matching to genetic samples stored on file. The samples will be treated as medical specimens in accordance with privacy statutes, and will not be tested for AIDS, drug use or anything else. In a criminal investigation however, authorities would be forced to comply.

DEF

DEF

A drug used to prevent the formation of blood clots by hindering coagulation of the blood.

CONT

Blood-thinners(anticoagulants) have various uses. Some are used for the prophylaxis(prevention) of thromboembolic disorders; others are used for the treatment of thromboembolism. Anticoagulant solutions are also used for the preservation of stored whole blood and blood fractions. Anticoagulants are also used to keep laboratory blood specimens from clotting.

CONT

Distinctions are made between: 1. Oral anticoagulants - of coumarin type, which inhibit the synthesis of vitamin-K-dependent coagulation factors in the liver - thrombocyte aggregation inhibitors, which exert their effect by inhibiting aggregation of blood platelets 2. Intravenous or subcutaneous "heparinoid" anticoagulants.

the presence of fructose (levulose) in the urine.

CONT

Fructosuria is a very rare inherited metabolic disorder. It is characterized by the excretion of fruit sugar(fructose) in the urine. Normally, no fructose is excreted in the urine. This condition is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme fructokinase in the liver. This enzyme is needed for the synthesis of glycogen(the body's form of stored energy) from fructose. The presence of fructose in the blood and urine may lead to an incorrect diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus.

Hungarian Red was originally used as a staining solution in Hungary to stain fingerprints in blood. It was rediscovered in 1995 when a long stored sample that had almost been forgotten was employed at a gruesome murder with lots of blood in Holland. At this scene, a number of footprints were more or less visible. The detective remembered the sample from Hungary. The staining solution worked well, so more was sent from Hungary to process the whole crime scene.

Metal dog tags bearing a soldier's name, rank and serial number for identification in case of death date to the early part of the century, when battles were still being fought with bullets and bayonets. But combatants in today's wars are not just killed, they are sometimes obliterated, dog tags and all. So the U. S. Army began collecting blood and tissue samples from new recruits, part of an ambitious "genetic dog tag" program that will eventually allow pathologists to identify the smallest tissue specimens by cross-matching to genetic samples stored on file. The Pentagon aims to collect specimens from all 2 million active service members by the year 2000.
