Many inputs and practices used by conventional farmers are... used in sustainable agriculture. Sustainable farmers, however, maximize reliance on natural, renewable, and on-farm inputs. Equally important are the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a particular strategy. Converting to sustainable practices does not mean simple input substitution. Frequently, it substitutes enhanced management and scientific knowledge for conventional inputs, especially chemical inputs that harm the environment on farms and in rural communities. The goal is to develop efficient, biological systems which do not need high levels of material inputs.

The French Facility for Global Environment(FFEM) was created by the French Government in 1994, following the first Earth Summit, to implement sustainable development projects that integrate the preservation of global public goods, international solidarity and innovation in developing and emerging countries. The FFEM promotes innovative solutions in the fields of biodiversity, climate, international waters, land degradation, including deforestation, chemical pollutants and the stratospheric ozone layer.

The Sustainable Development Research Institute(SDRI) was established in April 1991 to foster policy relevant research on sustainability. The Institute merged with the Institute of Resources and Environment in 2002 to form the Institute of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, within which SDRI remains as a research group. SDRI encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, departments and other centres at UBC, as well as other institutes and programs undertaking sustainability research in Canada and around the world. Green chemistry, also called sustainable chemistry, is a chemical philosophy encouraging the design of products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Whereas environmental chemistry is the chemistry of the natural environment, and of pollutant chemicals in nature, green chemistry seeks to reduce and prevent pollution at its source.

The concept of Sustainable Chemistry represents an area of innovation, which not only preserves resources, but also stands for a development process in the chemical industry. Sustainable Chemistry aspirates to raise the stake of less dangerous chemicals as well as production of environmentally high-quality products from preferable renewable resources. This obviates emissions and excessive consumption of resources like energy and materials. The principle of Sustainable Chemistry comprises important elements in areas like environment, economy and society. Sustainable Chemistry deals with the whole life of intrinsic safe chemicals and products, including their production, processing, use and disposal. Intrinsic safe chemicals and products are characterised by low toxicity to environment and human health and low persistence and accumulation potential. Thereby environment and human health are protected in the first place in the life of chemicals and socio-economic follow-up costs are avoided. Additionally, production of sustainable chemicals and products contributes to economic profit for innovative enterprises and thereby affords an opportunity for competitive advantage compared to production and marketing in old-fashioned concepts. The Federal Office of Regional Development(Quebec)(FORD-Q), the Biotechnology Research Institute(BRI) of the National Research Council(NRC), and the City of Montreal are today announcing a major investment, the first step toward the creation in Montreal of a research, development and demonstration centre, the first of its kind in Canada for the environmental technologies sector involved with industrial site remediation. This sector represents a market that is growing rapidly worldwide. The Montreal Centre of Excellence for Environmental Site Remediation fits perfectly into the concept of "technological platforms, "the approach favoured by Environment Canada to stimulate Metropolitan Montreal' s economy. Technological platforms make it possible to test environmental technologies and promote them to potential clients. This concept also contributes to furthering the economic growth of the environmental industry in the context of sustainable development. The Centre's mission will be to contribute to the development of effective and economical expertise in the area of restoring contaminated urban sites, which are a serious obstacle to economic development for cities in general and for Metropolitan Montreal in particular. It will also encourage the transfer of proven technologies to the private sector and the development of collaborative research projects and strategic alliances.

This network, which is now known as the Federal Greening Network, brings together those responsible for the environment and buildings. It was created in the spring of 1995 at the request of the committee on sustainable development of the Quebec Council of Senior Federal Officials. The goal was to set up a regional federal environmental management network to ensure interdepartmental discussion and joint action in order to help federal organizations comply with new federal requirements concerning sustainable development. Environment Canada was assigned to organize the network and the Environmental Protection Branch coordinates network activities and provides the tools its partners need.
