The Sustainable Forest Management Network …, one of Canada's 22 Networks of Centres of Excellence, provides interdisciplinary research on the management of the forests of Canada. It focuses on integrated and directed research in developing new planning and management tools for industry, as well as policy insights and improved institutions for government, to assist in ensuring that Canada's forests are managed sustainably. The SFM Network began in 1995 as a research organization under the NCE [Network for Centres of Excellence] program and is centered at the University of Alberta.

NatGRID is an acronym that stands for National Georeferenced Resource Information for Decision-makers. The aim is to provide information on the spatial distribution of the key ecological characteristics and wood resources of Canada's forests. These values reflect core issues in the debate about sustainable development. To generate this information requires the integration of biological field survey data(that has typically been collected by forest researchers), remotely sensed data about forest canopy cover and most importantly, spatial data that model the environmental drivers of forest systems.

Christian PIERRET, Secrétaire d'État à l'Industrie, a demandé à l'ADEME [Agence de l'environnement et de la maîtrise de l'énergie] de concevoir et de mettre en œuvre [...] un nouveau plan [...] en faveur du bois-énergie [bois combustible] : le programme bois-énergie 2000-2006. Ce programme [...] vise l'ensemble du territoire national y compris les départements d'Outre-Mer et concerne les usages collectifs, mais aussi individuels du bois de feu. Il comporte : Un mécanisme d'aides à l'investissement pour l'acquisition de chaufferies bois ouvert aux entreprises industrielles, et au secteur résidentiel-tertiaire; l'expérimentation d'installations de cogénération au bois est encouragée dans ce cadre; un système de promotion du chauffage individuel au bois qui s'appuie sur la certification des appareils de chauffage et l'organisation de réseaux de distribution de bois combustible de qualité. Le programme bois-énergie conduit par l'ADEME a pour objectif : de maintenir à hauteur de 8 millions tep/an la consommation domestique de bois (bûches principalement) et d'améliorer de 10 % le rendement énergétique et la performance environnementale des chaudières individuelles; d'installer 1000 nouvelles chaudières collectives ou industrielles à bois au cours de la période 2000-2006, grâce à des actions structurantes sur la technologie, le marché d'approvisionnement et au partenariat avec les collectivités locales et les professionnels partenaires de la filière bois.

The dream of a rain forest saved by children began in 1987 at a small primary school in rural Sweden. The study of tropical forests prompted nine-year-old Roland Tiensuu to ask what he could do to keep the rain forest and the animals who live in it safe from destruction? A campaign raised money to help the Monteverde Conservation League buy and save threatened rain forest in Costa Rica. Roland and his classmates raised enough money to buy 15 acres(6 hectares) of rain forest. Costa Rican and international staff and volunteers work throughout the zone in forest preservation, reforestation, environmental education, and sustainable development. Called Bosque Eterno de los Ninos(Children's Eternal Forest), it is the first international children's rain forest in the world, a rain forest being saved by and for children, for the planet itself, for now and for tomorrow.

He also proposes the formation of an Ecoforestry Institute to oversee education and training programs based on his book, "The Forest Farmer Handbook". A forest for All, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association's third education program and its first for high school students and their teachers, was two and one-half years in development. It was launched in April 1994, and takes the form of a simulation game whose themes are sustainable forestry and the uses of forest land in Canada. Because forests and forestry are so different across Canada, two scenarios are provided : Boreala in central Canada and Arborea in the West.
