Launched at the eleventh UNCTAD [United Nations Conference on Trade and Development] quadrennial ministerial conference in São Paulo, Brazil, in June 2004, the E-Tourism Initiative is part of UNCTAD's task force on sustainable tourism for development. The Initiative is part of the UNCTAD XI Information and Communication Technologies [ICT] for Development Partnership. This partnership encompasses activities in the areas of free and open-source software, e-tourism, ICT policies, e-measurement, ICT indicators and e-finance.

Lancée lors de la onzième conférence ministérielle quadriennale de la CNUCED [Conférence des Nations Unies sur le commerce et le développement], qui s'est tenue à São Paulo, au Brésil, en juin 2004, l'Initiative E-Tourisme fait partie du Groupe de travail sur le tourisme durable pour le développement. Cette initiative est aussi une composante du Partenariat de la CNUCED XI sur les Technologies de l'Information et de la Communication (TIC) pour le développement. Ce partenariat inclut diverses activités dans les domaines des logiciels libres, du e-tourisme, de politique et de mesure des TIC, ainsi que de l'e-finance.

La Iniciativa es parte de la Asociación para el desarrollo: la Información y el Conocimiento al servicio del Desarrollo de la XI Conferencia de la UNCTAD. Esta asociación concentra actividades relativas a productos informáticos libres y de código de fuente abierto, turismo electrónico, políticas de las TIC [tecnologías de la información y de las comunicaciones], mediciones electrónicas, indicadores de las TIC y finanzas electrónicas.
