English

Subject field(s)
  • Data Banks and Databases
CONT

A parent-child hierarchy is a hierarchy in a dimension that is based on two table columns. Together, these columns define the hierarchical relationships among the members of the dimension.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Banques et bases de données
CONT

Record 3 2007-01-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Gemmology
  • Diamond Industry
DEF

[The] relative dimensions and angles of a polished diamond and the relationships between them; these include table size, crown angle, crown height, girdle thickness, pavilion angle, pavilion depth, culet size, girdle outline, length-to-width ratio, and total depth.

CONT

The proportions, the relationship between the various parts of the stone, determine the fire and brilliance of the diamond. If the proportions are not optimal, undesirable visual effects may occur.

CONT

Proportionscope: An optical instrument marketed by the Gemological Institute of America to compare the proportions of a brilliant-cut diamond with those of the Tolkowsky theoretical brilliant cut.

Key term(s)

Domaine(s)
  • Gemmologie

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
  • Industrial Techniques and Processes
  • Chemistry
DEF

An analytical technique analogous to x-ray diffraction in which an incident beam of neutrons is scattered by the atoms of a crystal.

CONT

Because elements that are close to each other in the Periodic Table differ considerably in their neutron-scattering ability, neutron diffraction is capable of distinguishing between them. For example, carbon nitrogen, and oxygen atoms can be readily identified by neutron diffraction, where as they appear almost identical by the x-ray method. More accurate determination of the bond lengths of light atoms and distribution of molecular bonding electrons is also possible. Details of molecular structure that can only be inferred by other techniques can often be observed directly by neutron diffraction. Investigations using this method include hydrogen bonding, so-called metal cluster compounds(C. H. M relationships) and electronic charge distributions.

Domaine(s)
  • Physique atomique
  • Techniques industrielles
  • Chimie
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematics
DEF

Logical consistency is a measure of the degree to which data complies with the technical specification. Validating logical consistency way involve tests to check that table and file names are set out as in the Data Dictionary. Also included are graphical tests which check such things as intersections, polygon closure, minimum sizes of polygons and topological relationships.
