The Kerrison Predictor was one of the first fully automated anti-aircraft fire-control systems. The Predictor solved the problem by doing all of the calculations mechanically through a complex system of gears. Inputs to its calculations included wind speed, ballistics of the gun and the rounds it fired, angle to the target in azimuth and altitude, and a user-input estimated target speed. Some of these inputs were fed in by dials, which turned gearing inside the Predictor to calculate the range(from the change in angle and estimated speed) and direction of motion. 1, record 5, English, - Kerrison%20Predictor

Record number: 15, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 15, English, - shot

The angle defined by the incident radar beam and the vertical (normal) to the intercepting surface. 3, record 20, English, - incidence%20angle
Record number: 20, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery. 3, record 20, English, - incidence%20angle

When both the amplitude and the phase information are available, it is possible to synthesize the polarization response for all the polarization states. To synthesize the response, phase information and two orthogonal(transmit and receive) polarization states are required. For example, most spaceborne SAR's(e. g. RADARSAT-2) use the HH and VV polarization configuration to satisfy the orthogonality condition. Three dimensional polarization response plots are typically used to illustrate the polarimetry response for a given target. The following conventions are commonly used : The radar response is normalized between 0 and 1 [. ] The horizontal axes are the ellipticity angle... and the orientation angle... The ellipticity angle ranges between-45°(right circularly polarized) and +45°(left circularly polarized). When [ellipticity angle equals 0°, we have linear polarization. The orientation angle... is usually defined between-90° and +90°, but is sometimes defined between 0° and +180°. 2, record 21, English, - ellipticity%20angle

RADARSAT ScanSAR Beam Modes : A ScanSAR beam mode is composed of either two, three, or four single beams. The sequence of beams is organized so that the data is collected from a larger area, than what can be collected using a single beam. The ability to "steer" the radar beam using different incidence angles increases the frequency of repeat coverage. For the ScanSAR beam modes, the radar backscatter decrease resulting from incidence angle differences within the image range should be considered before interpreting the image brightness of a specific target. Incidence angle corrections should be applied on the data before making a direct comparison of image brightness values from different Standard beam mode images. 2, record 25, English, - ScanSAR%20beam%20mode
