English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

The labeled cos end is used as a single reference point to arrange clones in an ordered array for mapping. Complete cleavage at the cos site in the target DNA is not required because uncleaved cos sites will not hybridize with the cosoligonucleotides. In addition, Lambda Terminase cleaves vectors containing the cos site; i. e., cosmids and BACs(bacterial artificial chromosomes). Linearized cosmids give much higher efficiencies in in vitro lambda packaging systems or transfection into animal cells.

ScanSAR processing uses the Spectral Analysis(SPECAN) algorithm to produce full resolution images for RADARSAT ScanSAR data. PrecisionScan uses a range of image analysis functions to assess the quality of images produced, including : Point Target Analysis [;] Distributed Target Analysis [;] ScanSAR Analysis [;] Azimuth Ambiguity Ratio Analysis [;] Swath Characterization [;] Elevation Pattern Determination. These tools are based on the RADARSAT Calibration Workstation Array developed for the Canadian Space Agency.

The presence of an axial plasma jet in dynamic hohlraum experiments can affect our interpretation of the radiation temperature within the hohlraum. We expect to see a jet on PBFAZ, after the tungsten wire array implodes and strikes the inner annular foam target. If this jet is created by the radiation from the wires heating the outer edge of the foam, analytic calculations suggest it will have a negligible effect on the transmitted soft x-ray spectrum. How-ever, creation or modification of a plasma jet by accelerator prepulse, magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, or elec-trode effects could affect our analysis of the spectral data as seen through the end-on viewing aperture.

ESA has presently only developed a basic end effector(BEE) for the European robotic arm. Although the BEE can support EVA and has a good overall performance, its size and mass make its use impractical for most of the operations involved in servicing payloads external to the spacecraft. The dexterity needed for these operations requires a much smaller, compact gripper, equipped with an array of sensors which fully monitor both its status and operations. Furthermore, it is desirable to keep to a minimum the limitations and constraints imposed on the payload by the interface requirements. Functions performed by the gripper are : recovery of insertion misalignments; positioning of an object at a target location; securing an object firmly and releasably; provision of mechanical power; monitoring gripper status and operation.

CONT

The Basic End-Effector (BEE) [is] permanently attached to the Robot arm tool-flange. [Its] mechanical and electrical interfaces are compatible with the Standard Grasp Interface (SGI), available on all TEF [Technology Exposure Facility] subjects. Actions include grasp, move and release. Sensors include camera system for scene and close up visual inspection.

CONT

CONT

In a long synthetic aperture(array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground.

CONT

The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight (range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited.
