The characteristics of a radar echo are determined by 1) the waveform, frequency, and power of the incident wave; 2) the range and velocity of the target with respect to the radar; and 3) the size, shape, and composition of the target.

The effect of a considerable larger antenna is obtained synthetically by storing and combined processing of these multiple echoes. The SAR method operates only when the radar radiation is coherent.

L'intensité des échos radar fournit une mesure quantitative des précipitations, exprimée en millimètres par heure (mm/h), présentée au moyen de zones coloriées. En effet, plus l'écho renvoyé par le faisceau radar est important plus l'obstacle qui le renvoie est dense, et plus la pluie ou la neige est abondante.

RADARSAT ScanSAR Beam Modes : A ScanSAR beam mode is composed of either two, three, or four single beams. The sequence of beams is organized so that the data is collected from a larger area, than what can be collected using a single beam. The ability to "steer" the radar beam using different incidence angles increases the frequency of repeat coverage. For the ScanSAR beam modes, the radar backscatter decrease resulting from incidence angle differences within the image range should be considered before interpreting the image brightness of a specific target. Incidence angle corrections should be applied on the data before making a direct comparison of image brightness values from different Standard beam mode images.

The ScanSAR beam mode, a feature unique to RADARSAT, provides repeat coverage of large areas and yields critical information for strategic operations planning, ScanSAR provides information for scales on the order of 1:5,000,000 to 1:250,000.

(...), the MTD [Moving Target Detection] principle involves dividing up the entire radar coverage area into small range-azimuth cells-(...) called ’coherent processing intervals’(CPI). Eight pulses generated at a constant repetition frequency are assigned to each cell, and each return is subjected to Doppler filtering over a range of velocity values. The particular feature of MTD is its ability to measure the density of clutter and to detect the sudden presence of an additional element-such as an aircraft moving into a particular cell-even though it may have zero relative velocity on account of its tangential track.
