TARGET ORBIT [13 records]

Record 1 2025-06-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launching and Space Maneuvering
CONT

Stopping(orbital insertion). The ability to slow down from a heliocentric orbit and to enter a desired orbit around a target planet is a basic requirement for virtually all augmentation missions. The Mars sample return mission, for example, requires two such orbit insertions. First, the spacecraft must enter orbit around Mars, and later, the sample return capsule must safely enter orbit around Earth to await recovery.

Once it has reached the correct orientation for rendezvous with the already-orbiting International Space Station comprised of the Russian Zarya control module and the US Unity module, Zvezda becomes the passive vehicle in the final approach and docking operations. As the passive target vehicle, Zvezda will maintain a station-keeping orbit as the active Zarya control module performs the rendezvous and docking under ground control using the Russian automated rendezvous and docking system(Kurs).

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
CONT

The Satellite Transfer Vehicle (STV), which provides an economical and adaptable longboat for space satellites, is discussed. Market factors affecting satellite delivery and Space Shuttle upper-stage design are discussed, taking into account how the STV may fit into the Shuttle or the Ariane upper stage. The development and technical configuration, and commercial potential of the STV are examined. For the Space Station, the STV can satisfy early missions requirements defined for the NASA Orbital Transfer Vehicle.

OBS

The Surrey Small Satellite Transfer Vehicle(S3TV) should be capable of transferring a number of nano-or picosatellites from the launch vehicle injection orbit to a target orbit and providing phased deployment into a constellation. The resulting economy of scale could provide an opportunity for regular and lower cost launches. Simplifying the interfaces with the launch provider and depending less on the launch provider for specific interfaces to numerous small payloads can streamline the launch campaign and reduce scheduling and technical risks.

CONT

ENVISAT/ASAR may be calibrated using the ERS [European Remote Sensing Satellite] instrument. Two SAR [synthetic aperture radar] images of the same area are required and at least one strong point-like target must be visible in both scenes. The target response should originate from the same stable scatterer. For the technique a very coarse digital elevation model(DEM) of the scene is suitable. The method bases on the very well-known timing parameters and high orbit accuracy of the ERS instrument(5 cm radial and 15 cm along track orbit accuracy).

Record 7 2006-03-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launching and Space Maneuvering
DEF

A limited period of time during which the launch of a particular spacecraft may be undertaken.

CONT

For launches into Earth orbit the main constraints are the desired orbit, the point of injection into that orbit, and the possibility of a collision with other orbiting spacecraft or orbital debris. For launches to interplanetary trajectories, the time of launch is constrained by the relative positions of the planets, at the time of both launch and encounter(i. e. the spacecraft must be aimed at a point in space that the planet will have reached by the time of encounter). A spacecraft launched outside the launch window would require more propellant and/or more time to reach its target.

OBS

There are also geometric windows (e.g., restrictions in launch azimuth).

OBS

launch window: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

CONT

Even today, a geostationary satellite, whose useful life has ended, must be abandoned in space. The experimental servicing satellite ESS applies robotics to resolve the problem of servicing a non-cooperative target in or near to a geostationary orbit, a region of space still out of reach to manned spaceflight. A three-month demonstration flight of ESS has been planned and all phases of its mission have been defined. These include the acquisition, inspection and servicing of an orbiting satellite through to parking it in a "graveyard" orbit. The project builds on the experience gained with the robotics technology experiment Rotex, flown on the D2 Mission.
