Side echoes[ :] Squeezing a... multi-directional radio wave into a directional radar wave is never fully achieved. Not all of the radar wave can be focused by the radar aerial into the main lobe. Some escapes into what are known as side lobes. Side echoes are caused by reflections from the side lobes of the radar beam. They are likely to appear when a target is a good radar reflector and in range of the weaker side lobes.

A remote-sensing term referring to the process of assigning different colours to different spectral bands.

The image processing consisted in generating intensity images and one coherence image. To facilitate their analysis and interpretation, a coloured composition has been created with the results. This composition is obtained by adding the coherence image in red, the average of both images phase intensities in green and the difference between these phase intensities in blue. As such, a high coherence level(value close to 1) appears in red and indicates a very good phase correlation between the two images, a consequence of the various mechanisms of radar signal scattering and of the lack of change which could affect the target. On the contrary, a weak coherence level(value tending to 0) appears in black and indicates a movement in these zones during the 24 hours interval which separated the two image shots. Lastly, the white spots correspond to areas with a strong radar signal backscattering i. e. with zones of hills or vegetation.

A Spotlight SAR steers the antenna beam to continuously illuminate a certain region on ground much longer than in the Stripmap case [Carrara et al., 1995]. As a result, the azimuth bandwidth becomes larger, which hence may be exploited to increase the azimuth resolution. ... It offers the possibility to measure different components of the surface current using only a single pass (in case of a spotlight single-pass interferometry configuration). To this purpose the total azimuth bandwidth is divided into different (e.g. two) non-overlapping parts which are processed separately with their individual optimum Doppler centroid values so that the resulting images represent observations from two different aspect angles. A spotlight system operated in that way provides data similar to a Dual-Beam ATI [Allied Telesyn International] configuration.
