NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Regolith Explorer asteroid sample return mission (OSIRIS-REx), is the first U.S. mission to collect a sample of an asteroid and return it to Earth for study. Analyzing the sample will help scientists understand the early solar system, as well as the hazards and resources of near-Earth space.

OSIRIS-REx [was launched] on September 8, 2016. As planned, the spacecraft will reach its asteroid target in 2018 and return a sample to Earth in 2023.

Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target. When the light transmitted from the lidar hits a target moving towards or away from the lidar, the wavelength of the light reflected/scattered off the target will be changed slightly. This is known as a Doppler shift-hence Doppler Lidar. If the target is moving away from the lidar, the return light will have a longer wavelength(sometimes referred to as a red shift), if moving towards the lidar the return light will be at a shorter wavelength(blue shifted). The target can be either a hard target or an atmospheric target-the atmosphere contains many microscopic dust and aerosol particles which are carried by the wind.

... the Kurs automated docking system on Zarya controls the docking with Zvezda, which will serve as the passive "target" during the docking. Should the automated docking system fail, Russia would launch two cosmonauts to the station on a Soyuz about 15 days later. The crew would dock with Zvezda and assemble a backup teleoperated rendezvous control system(TORU), that would be used to dock the modules. The crew would return to Earth shortly after the modules were docked.
