English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

Ring netting is a method of fishing for mid-water shoaling fish species. It is used... to target shoals of sardines, and occasionally anchovies and herring. Ring nets work in a similar way to the much larger purse seine nets. An encircling net is shot around a shoal of fish, and a rope beneath the net then pulls it together[, ] encircling the shoal.

Subject field(s)
  • Curling
DEF

The series of concentric circles marked out on the playing surface or sheet with a large point (button) at their centre towards which the rocks are delivered in order to score.

CONT

The house is formed of four concentric circles having a diameter of 12 (3,66 m), 8 (2,44 m), 4 (1,22 m) and 2 feet (0,61 m) respectively. The ring enclosed by the 12-foot and the 8-foot circles (called "outer ring") is blue and the one enclosed by the 4-foot and the 2-foot circles (called "inner ring" or "inside ring"), red, which leaves uncolored the ring enclosed by the 8-foot and the 4-foot circles (called "middle ring") and the inside of the 2-foot circle (called "tee" or "button"), giving them a white appearance. Seen from above, the house appears as a series of three rings, blue, white and red around a white button.

OBS

The scoring side receives 1 point for each stone inside the house that is not canceled by reason of an opponent's stone lying closer to the center, the house being the designation given to the "target, "embracing the entire area inside the outer ring.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Tomography
  • Radiotherapy
DEF

A novel treatment approach where the ring gantry irradiation geometry of a helical CT [computed tomography] scanner is combined with an intensity-modulated megavoltage x-ray fan beam.

CONT

Unlike standard radiotherapy, in which treatment is delivered through one or a few separate beams, helical tomotherapy delivers treatment with a rotating, intensity-modulated fan beam. The patient is translated through the ring of the gantry while the beam is rotated around, so that the treatment beam forms a helical shape in a similar manner to that of computed tomography(CT) scans. The ring gantry provides a stable platform to perform tomographic verification of both setup and delivered dose.... Because of the complete freedom of helical tomotherapy to deliver treatment from all angles around the patient and with intensity modulation and inverse treatment planning, it is possible to treat highly complex and irregular target volumes while giving a low radiation dose to surrounding normal structures.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tomographie
  • Radiothérapie
CONT

  • Orbital Stations
CONT

The Space Shuttle stops within 50 meters of Mir, which is approximately one-half the length of a football field. From that position the Space Shuttle waits for clearance from Mission Control to continue. When the command is given to continue, the Reaction Control System is activated again and the Space Shuttle closes in on Mir at a speed of about 0. 05 meters per second until it reaches a distance of about 9 meters. There, the Space Shuttle stops again and waits for approximately 5 minutes. The Commander and Pilot make sure they can see the docking target clearly and fine-tune the alignment of the Space Shuttle with the docking target. A large black cross called the Stand-off Cross is mounted 30 centimeters(cm) above the back plate in the center of the target. When the Commander has the Stand-off Cross squarely in line with the docking target, he or she maneuvers the Space Shuttle and makes contact with the docking ring. Once a series of hooks is engaged, the Space Shuttle is then successfully docked with Mir.

The AUG's ergonomic qualities and the advantages of the optical sight are not readily evident when the weapon is fired.
