CONT

A satellite-guided weapon receives signals from orbiting satellites that direct it to its target. These satellites are part of the global positioning system(GPS), which circles the earth and provides extremely accurate data about the location of specific points on the ground.... Satellite weapons have two main drawbacks. First, it is possible to jam a GPS signal.... The second drawback is that the guidance is only as good as the information provided to the satellites.

The empirical line method is an atmospheric correction technique that provides an alternative to radiative transfer modelling approaches. It offers a relatively simple means of surface reflectance calibration, providing that a series of invariant-in-time calibration target measurements are available. This technique has been applied with variable success to both airborne data and coarser spatial resolution satellite sensor data.

The Satellite Transfer Vehicle (STV), which provides an economical and adaptable longboat for space satellites, is discussed. Market factors affecting satellite delivery and Space Shuttle upper-stage design are discussed, taking into account how the STV may fit into the Shuttle or the Ariane upper stage. The development and technical configuration, and commercial potential of the STV are examined. For the Space Station, the STV can satisfy early missions requirements defined for the NASA Orbital Transfer Vehicle.

OBS

The Surrey Small Satellite Transfer Vehicle(S3TV) should be capable of transferring a number of nano-or picosatellites from the launch vehicle injection orbit to a target orbit and providing phased deployment into a constellation. The resulting economy of scale could provide an opportunity for regular and lower cost launches. Simplifying the interfaces with the launch provider and depending less on the launch provider for specific interfaces to numerous small payloads can streamline the launch campaign and reduce scheduling and technical risks.

ENVISAT/ASAR may be calibrated using the ERS [European Remote Sensing Satellite] instrument. DEF

The angle defined by the incident radar beam and the vertical (normal) to the intercepting surface.

CONT

The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery.

The frequency shift observed at a receiver due to any relative motion between transmitter and receiver.

CONT

The Doppler frequency depends on the component of satellite velocity in the line-of-sight direction to the target. For this reason, azimuth frequency is often referred to as Doppler frequency.
