Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Constant False-alarm Rate(CFAR). A constant false-alarm rate in the presence of variable levels of noise is usually a requirement placed on any modern radar. It is easily achieved in CW radars by use of filter banks. The energy reaching the filter bank is restricted either by automatic gain control or, when feasible, by limiting, and the thresholds in the circuitry following the filter bank are properly set with respect to the level in the total band. In a typical setting technique, random noise is injected into the amplifier that drives the filter bank, and each threshold is set to achieve the desired false-alarm rate. The level of noise is then varied and the threshold rechecked. If the limiting is proper, the false-alarm rate should not change. However, target signals in the absence of noise are unaffected, as they do not change the total energy present in the broad doppler spectrum sufficiently to reach the limiting level. 1, record 5, English, - constant%20false%2Dalarm%20rate

Pelagic longline gear is composed of a long length of mainline deployed across ocean attached to numerous baited "branchlines" that are suspended in the water column between regularly spaced floats. Each branchline connects the mainline to a single, baited hook with anywhere from 4 to 30 or more branchlines(baited hooks) set between floats. The floats may be attached directly to the mainline for a shallower set or connected to "floatlines" to target deeper-dwelling species. Each section of mainline with its branchlines between two adjacent floats is defined as a "basket" of gear as traditional style "basket gear" was composed of mainline sections that were stored in baskets when not in use. 3, record 7, English, - pelagic%20longline

Record number: 32, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 32, English, - shot

Canada's climate change plan calls for a 55 million tonne(Mt) cap on Large Final Emitters and the creation of a carbon offset trading system to achieve these levels. A target price of $15 has been set as the maximum that industry will have to pay to offset one tonne of carbon.... All Canadian companies will have the opportunity to capitalize on reducing carbon emissions starting in 2008, but the credit process and eventual market potential are still unclear. As the system unfolds, it will be important for Large Final Emitters and other companies or individuals to maximize their potential gain.... If companies are able to achieve improve efficiency and share best practices by looking for ways to reduce emissions and trade credits, then the market should expand. The compliance of each Annex B Party with its emission target will be assessed by comparing its emissions during the commitment period with the assigned amount held by the Party. A system of electronic registries is being established to keep track of the levels of assigned amount for each Party.... In order to transparently coordinate and track the movement of all these units, registries are linked via secure [Internet] channels. It is the job of the international transaction log, which is being put in place by the secretariat, to coordinate and monitor all these activities and ensure that each step conforms to the rules set under the Kyoto Protocol. 1, record 43, English, - international%20transaction%20log

To target a specific area on the Earth disk, the scanning thresholds can be set so that a reduced number of forward scan lines are included in each scan cycle. Since these reduced scans can be completed in less time than a full Earth disk scan, reduced scans can provide imagery with a higher temporal resolution than that of the normal half-hourly full Earth disk scans. This mode of scanning is often referred to as reduced scanning or rapid scanning. It should be noted that in rapid scan imaging mode the spin rate, the stepping rate, the number of pixels per line of image data and the resolution of the image data are identical to that for normal full Earth disk scans. 2, record 46, English, - scan%20imaging

A very original set of experiments carried out by the Unit of Molecular Biology of Gene Expression concerns another protein essential for mouse development that is also a transcription factor. This factor known as KBF2 or RBP-Jk is homologous to a Drosophila gene product, Su(H)(Suppressor of Hairless), which belongs to the Notch signal transduction cascade involved in regulating the competence of a cell to respond to specific developmental cues. A likely function of the Su(H) protein is to serve as an anchor on DNA for non DNA-binding transcriptional activators. This function is conserved in the Notch pathway : the activation of this transmembrane receptor likely involves a proteolytic cleavage step which releases its intracellular domain; following nuclear translocation, it activates its target genes by binding to the Su(H) protein, which is already bound to several sites in the target promoters. 2, record 54, English, - Su%28H%29%20protein

We have replaced bottom-up matching with an approach based on analogical mapping. Such an approach uses a set of heuristics to delimit what is to be "imported" from a base to a target domain at a given time. One such heuristic involves mapping previously formed abstractions, such as those embodying causal and planning rules. 3, record 56, English, - analogical%20mapping

The only duty of the concept teaching program is to select the small sets to be presented at each iteration from a pool of prestored classified instances. Its objective is to find the sequence that will minimize the time elapsed between the presentation of the first instances and the last error in classification. To this end, it maintains a model of the student's set of hypotheses(exactly how the model is inferred is left unspecified). In addition to a definition of the(target concept), it is given a model of its student's learning mechanisms. Hence it can select the instances by which its learning model would minimize the difference between its student model' s set of hypotheses and the correct concept. This difference must be computed according to some distance measure, which can be very difficult to determine. 1, record 64, English, - concept%20teaching%20program
