synthetic aperture radar; SAR :[A] synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is a side-looking imaging radar usually operating on either an aircraft or a spacecraft. The radar transmits a series of short, coherent pulses to the ground producing a footprint whose size is inversely proportional to the antenna size, its aperture. Because the antenna size is generally small, the footprint is large and any particular target is illuminated by several hundred radar pulses. Intensive signal processing involving the detection of small Doppler shifts in the reflected signals from targets to the moving radar produces a high resolution image that is equivalent to one that would have been collected by a radar with a much larger aperture. 4, record 5, English, - C%2Dband%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

The repeater, which consists of an amplifier and a programmable delay line, amplifies and delays the intercepted signal. The image processing consisted in generating intensity images and one coherence image. To facilitate their analysis and interpretation, a coloured composition has been created with the results. This composition is obtained by adding the coherence image in red, the average of both images phase intensities in green and the difference between these phase intensities in blue. As such, a high coherence level(value close to 1) appears in red and indicates a very good phase correlation between the two images, a consequence of the various mechanisms of radar signal scattering and of the lack of change which could affect the target. On the contrary, a weak coherence level(value tending to 0) appears in black and indicates a movement in these zones during the 24 hours interval which separated the two image shots. Lastly, the white spots correspond to areas with a strong radar signal backscattering i. e. with zones of hills or vegetation. 3, record 11, English, - colour%20composition

Depolarization occurs when the polarization state changes between the transmitted and received signal. For example, changing a HH to a HV response. There are four mechanisms known to cause depolarization : a quasi-specular reflection as a result of the difference between the Fresnel reflection coefficients for a two-dimensional, smoothly undulating surface [;] a multi-scattering due to target surface roughness [;] a multiple scattering due to volume scattering [;] anisotropic properties of the targets. 3, record 26, English, - depolarization

2, record 26, French, - d%C3%A9polarisation

For three-day intervals, an average radar cross-section (NRCS-40) is computed for each grid point by linear regression between the measured NRCS [Normalized Radar Cross-Section] and their respective incidence angles. NRCS-40 is the value of this regression line at an incidence angle of 40°. This procedure accounts for the incidence angle dependence of the NRCS, which is highly variable in spring when the backscattering mechanism changes from volume to surface scattering depending on snow cover, snow wetness, soil moisture and the penetration depth of the microwaves. 2, record 32, English, - backscattering%20mechanism

The Positron Microscope was designed and built to be a hybrid instrument capable of performing several types of positrons and electron microscopy. For both electrons and positrons the microscope can be run in one of two modes : magnifying mode in which particles leaving the target are focussed onto a CEMA plate assembly to form a magnified image and scanning mode in which the amplitude of a signal is recorded as a function of the position(and possibly energy) of the incident beam. As an electron microscope the instrument will be able to operate in both magnifying and scanning(SEM) modes. As a positron microscope, however, source considerations will limit its immediate use to magnifying mode, i. e. positron reemission microscopy. 2, record 45, English, - positron%20microscope

A very original set of experiments carried out by the Unit of Molecular Biology of Gene Expression concerns another protein essential for mouse development that is also a transcription factor. This factor known as KBF2 or RBP-Jk is homologous to a Drosophila gene product, Su(H)(Suppressor of Hairless), which belongs to the Notch signal transduction cascade involved in regulating the competence of a cell to respond to specific developmental cues. A likely function of the Su(H) protein is to serve as an anchor on DNA for non DNA-binding transcriptional activators. This function is conserved in the Notch pathway : the activation of this transmembrane receptor likely involves a proteolytic cleavage step which releases its intracellular domain; following nuclear translocation, it activates its target genes by binding to the Su(H) protein, which is already bound to several sites in the target promoters. 2, record 47, English, - Su%28H%29%20protein
