TARGET SPLIT [5 records]

Record 1 2015-06-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fencing
DEF

The basic attacking move toward an opponent consisting in a full extension of the arm followed by a wide step forward of the foot on the same side as the sword arm (front foot) while keeping the other foot (rear foot) in place.

CONT

The lunge is a sudden attack on an opponent. The back leg is used for power. First, you swiftly extend your sword arm so that your foil is thrust straight at the target. In the next split second, you lift your front leg forward.

OBS

The lunge is an aggressive action designed to enable the fencer to reach the opponent from a distance greater than that afforded by extension of the weapon arm.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Escrime
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Lasers and Masers
DEF

A single laser system whose beam is split into twenty separate beams, each of which is amplified several hundredfold before being focused into a chamber in a spherical array of light that converges upon the tiny target.

OBS

The 20-beam laser, completed in 1977, provided more power, better control over conditions, higher temperature, and greater fuel compression than previous lasers, including delivering 10 kilojoules of energy in a billionth of a second.

OBS

It is called Shiva, after the multiarmed Hindu god of both creation and destruction.
